Match Day One Recap
Tournament debutants Georgia were tipped to be the whipping boys in Group F but they made Turkey work incredibly hard for the three points on Tuesday. The 3-1 final score flattered Turkey at the end of a thoroughly entertaining match. The winning side edged the possession stats with 55.9% possession against 44.1% for Georgia whilst Turkey also managed 22 shots on goal compared to 14 for the Georgians.
Mert Muldur had given Turkey the lead before they were pegged back by a Georges Mikautadze strike. The match remained level at 1-1 until a wonder strike from teenage sensation Arda Guler on 65 minutes. Turkey scored their third goal in the 97th minute after counter-attacking from a Georgia corner.
The Czech Republic also lost during the opening round of fixtures in Group F but like Georgia they can count themselves unfortunate. Lukas Provod had given Czech Republic the lead against Portugal in the 62nd minute before a Robin Hranac own-goal levelled the match seven minutes later. With the game in Leipzig heading for a draw, Francisco Conceicao stepped off the bench to grab a 92nd minute winner for Portugal.
In a match dominated by Portugal, Roberto Martinez’s side boasted 73.3% possession and 19 shots on goal compared to just 5 shots for the Czech Republic.
Team News
Both nations came through their opening fixtures unscathed and after putting in a solid performance in their respective matches, both sides are expected to field an unchanged starting XI.
Georgia star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will again start up front alongside Tuesday’s goalscorer Georges Mikautadze whilst Mojmir Chytil will be benched once more despite impressing in a 30 minute cameo for the Czech Republic against Portugal.

Georgia may have lost their opening fixture against Turkey but the fearless approach to their first ever match at a major international tournament certainly earned them plenty of new fans. Schick didn’t play a lot of football in 2023/24 and will appreciate getting an hour against Portugal on Tuesday. Whilst he is unlikely to match the five-goal haul achieved at Euro 2020, Schick still looks a solid bet at 21/10 to score at any time on Saturday.
