Euro 2024: Turkey v Portugal - Match Preview & Odds

Portugal and Turkey meet in Dortmund on Saturday in the second round of group matches in Euro 2024. Both nations got their respective tournaments off to a winning start earlier this week and the outcome of Saturday’s meeting should decide the winner of Group F. As we look ahead to this key international fixture, here at betting.bet we will provide the latest team news, match insights and exclusive betting tips and free bet offers as well as the latest pre-match odds from our partners at bet365.

A Winning Start

Both Turkey and Portugal got their tournaments off to a winning start on Tuesday but neither enjoyed a comfortable evening on match day one. Turkey were pushed all the way by tournament debutants Georgia whilst Portugal needed a stoppage time winner to overcome the Czech Republic.

Turkey and Georgia kicked off the group with Turkey emerging as 3-1 winners. However this only tells half the story as Georgia were very much in the game throughout. Turkey just shaded the game with 55.9 possession and eight shots on target compared to Georgia's five. Turkey had taken the lead on 25 minutes through Mert Muldur but were pegged back by Georges Mikautadze seven minutes later. With the game finely poised at 1-1, teenage sensation Arda Guler scored a wonder goal on 65 minutes whilst Karem Akturkoglu scored a third on 97 minutes with Georgia pushing for an equaliser.

Portugal were heavy favourites for their opening match against the Czech Republic but fell behind to a Lukas Provod strike on 62 minutes. A Robin Hranac own goal levelled the match on 69 minutes and with the game looking set to end all-square, Francisco Conceicao stepped off the bench to score a 92nd minute winner for Portugal. Portugal dominated for large periods on Tuesday, earning 73.3% possession and attempting 19 shots on goals compared to just five for the Czech Republic.

Team News

Neither Turkey or Portugal have any fresh injury problems to report and could both name an unchanged side on Saturday. However we are expecting Turkey to freshen up their starting XI. Both Zeki Celik and Merih Demiral are pushing for a recall in defence whilst Yusuf Yazici will put pressure on Orkun Kokcu as the starting number ten.

Predicted Line Ups

Turkey: Gunok, Muldur, Akaydin, Bardakci, Kadioglu, Ozcan, Calhanoglu, Guler, Kokcu, Yildiz, Yilmaz

Portugal: Costa, Pepe, Dias, Mendes, Dalot, Fernandes, Vitinha, Cancelo, Bernardo, Ronaldo, Leao

Turkey v Portugal: Head-to-Head

Portugal have an excellent record against Turkey with seven wins from nine previous meetings and have won all six competitive matches they have contested. The most recent match between Turkey and Portugal came in March 2022 with Portugal emerging as 3-1 winners in the FIFA World Cup play-off semi-final tie. Otavia and Diogo Jota gave Portugal a 2-0 half-time lead, Burak Yilmaz pulled a goal back midway through the second half but Matheus Nunes sealed the tie in the 90th minute.

Betting Tips

Portugal dominated for large periods of their win over the Czech Republic but were not clinical enough in the final third. More of a cutting edge and a little more luck should see them maintain their 100% record on Saturday. Portugal look good value for the win at 4/7.

None of the four nations involved in Group F managed to keep a clean sheet during the opening round of matches and with a place in the knockout stage on offer to the winner in Dortmund on Saturday, we could be treated to another open, entertaining match. Both teams to score is priced at 4/5 whilst over 2.5 goals is equally appealing at 8/11.

Portugal have a wealth of attacking talent chomping at the bit on the substitutes’ bench which puts pressure on their starting forwards to start scoring sooner rather than later if they are to retain their starting spot. Cristiano Ronaldo is the bookies' favourite in most goalscorer markets and looks solid value at 10/11 to score at any time on Saturday. However, teammate Bruno Fernandes is arguably the better value at 2/1 in this particular market. The Manchester United captain has three goals in five internationals in 2024 and has racked up a respectable total of 22 goals in 68 internationals.
