Royal Ascot Day 3: Recap and Results
The pinnacle of the day was the Gold Cup, where Kyprios made a triumphant return!
Day three of Royal Ascot, also celebrated as "Ladies' Day", featured a prominent royal presence. King Charles and Queen Camilla were back in attendance. They were joined by Prince William and Kate Middleton's parents, who all enjoyed the horse racing action from the comfort of the Royal Enclosure.
The Gold Cup
The pinnacle of the day was the Gold Cup, where Kyprios made a triumphant return, defeating Trawlerman in a captivating showdown to reclaim the title.
Having won in 2022 but sidelined last year due to a severe leg injury, Kyprios demonstrated an incredible recovery. Guided by jockey Ryan Moore and trained by Aidan O’Brien, the 11-10 favourite secured victory by a length after an intense final stretch, with Sweet William placing third. This will no doubt be the highlight of Royal Ascot 2024!
This victory marked O’Brien's ninth Gold Cup win, earning him praise as a "genius" from Michael Tabor, one of the horse's owners.
O’Brien shared the challenges Kyprios faced, overcoming a serious fetlock joint injury that was once life-threatening.
"It's a million to one, it's almost impossible to come back from what he came back from," O'Brien explained.
"At one stage, we weren't sure that he would live, but then he came back. We had to teach him how to walk and get him on a treadmill. It was like someone with a severe injury, comparable to a human winning the Olympics and then having to relearn basic movement, only to return to top form."
