Royal Ascot 2024: Day 5 Recap
The highlight of the day was Khaadem winning the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, the only Group 1 race on Day 5.
As the final day of Royal Ascot 2024 dawned, excitement was in the air for what promised to be a spectacular conclusion to a remarkable week of racing.
The day began in grand style with King Charles and Queen Camilla leading the prestigious carriage procession. Accompanying them were Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and Lady Charles Spencer-Churchill, setting a majestic tone for the events to come.
Khaadem Wins Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes!
The highlight of the day was the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, the only Group 1 race on Day 5. The crowd eagerly anticipated the race, and it did not disappoint. Khaadem, ridden by Oisin Murphy, delivered a thrilling performance to claim the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes for the second consecutive year.
Trained by Charlie Hills, Khaadem had stunned everyone as an 80/1 outsider to win this Group One contest last year. Although he hadn't been able to replicate that form in his four starts since, he found his stride on the fast ground he favors, successfully defending his crown.
The 2024 Ascot race saw a relatively small field of 13 runners. Karl Burke’s Swingalong set a bold pace, leading for much of the six-furlong contest.
However, Khaadem, at 14/1, was travelling strongly behind under the motionless Murphy. As the final stages approached, Murphy unleashed Khaadem, who surged ahead to beat Swingalong by half a length. Mill Stream secured third place, while 3/1 favourite Believing, who had finished fourth in the King Charles III Stakes earlier in the week, mirrored that position once again.
Hills said:
“What a horse. Two win of of these plus a Palace House, a Stewards’ Cup and a King George at Goodwood.
“He got a fantastic ride there, off the pace, and he never looked like he was going to get beat.
“He loves this track, I think it’s the first time he’s had his ground since he won this last year. I think fast ground is key to him.
“He had a lovely pitch, they went a strong pace in front and he travels for fun. He’s such a versatile horse, to think he was making the running over five (furlongs) two years ago. We then decided on a change of tack, ride him like a good horse over six and it seems to suit him really well.”
As previously covered the Royal family had many horses running in Ascot 2024, including Treasure on Day 5. Unfortunately, the horse did not live up to Royal expectations, coming 10th in the Golden Gates Stakes.
