How the World Cup works
The World Cup of Darts will get underway with a group stage including 36 of the 40 participating nations with the top four seeds (England, Wales, Netherlands and Scotland) all receiving a first round bye. The first knockout stage (round two) will consist of 16 teams in total, the 12 group winners and the four seeded nations.
The 36 teams taking part in round one will be placed in twelve groups of three with the highest placed team from each of the twelve groups progressing to the knockout stage. All twelve groups will include one seeded and two unseeded nations. The two unseeded nations will face off on day one (Thursday) with the seeded nations playing twice on day two as all nations compete in a round-robin format.

Betting Tips
Last year’s winning team of Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton are back again representing Wales and as the competition’s second seeds Wales have to be considered as one of the tournament favourites. Price and Clayton have formed a formidable partnership for Wales and as well as winning last year, they also steered Wales to World Cup glory in 2020.
An England team featuring the last two world champions are quite rightly the bookies’ outright favourites. Both world number one Luke Humphries and teammate Michael Smith reached the semi-final of this year’s Premier League and sit first and third respectively on this year’s PDC Order of Merit.
However the tournament dark-horses could be four-time World Cup winners, the Netherlands. Michael van Gerwen has been a part of three World Cup winning sides and although he’s not quite been at his best so far in 2024, MVG has still won the Dutch Darts Masters, qualified for the Premier League play-offs and reached the final of The Masters, Bahrain Darts Masters and German Darts Grand Prix.
This year van Gerwen teams up with Danny Noppert thanks to an excellent run of results that have seen the 33-year-old defeat Luke Humphries to win a Players Championship event and move up to third in the PDC ProTour Order of Merit.
