Euro 2024: England v Slovenia: Match Preview & Odds

England take on Slovenia in Cologne on Tuesday with both nations hoping to clinch a place in the knockout stage of Euro 2024. Group C has been underwhelming so far with none of the four nations involved really hitting top gear in the first two rounds of matches. Hoping for an improved performance from both England and Slovenia, here at betting.bet you’ll find the latest team news, match insights and expert betting tips as well as the latest odds and free bet offers from our betting partners at Coral.

Group C Recap

England started Euro 2024 as the bookies’ outright favourites and after taking the lead through Jude Bellingham just 13 minutes into their opening match against Serbia, England fans would’ve started to dream of football coming home. However, immediately after scoring England dropped off and invited Serbian pressure and were fortunate to escape with all three points.

Four days later and England clearly showed that no lessons had been learned from that win over Serbia as they once again scored early and once again immediately dropped off. The difference however in Munich is that Denmark capitalised on their dominance to earn a 1-1 draw in Frankfurt. Harry Kane was England’s goal scorer last Thursday before Morten Hjulmand scored from 25 yards for Denmark.

Slovenia kicked off their own Euro 2024 tournament with a 1-1 draw against Denmark. The Danes took an early lead through Christian Eriksen before Erik Janza equalised on 77 minutes. In their second group game, Slovenia looked on course to take all three points against Serbia thanks to a Zan Karnicnik strike however Luka Jovic stepped off the bench to score a 95th-minute equaliser for Serbia in Munich.

Team News

Unfortunately the Trent Alexander-Arnold experiment in midfield has not worked and Gareth Southgate is likely to make a chance in central midfield. Conor Gallagher has replaced Alexander-Arnold in both group games so far and will be in contention to start against Slovenia. Adam Wharton and Kobbie Mainoo are also possible central midfield options.

Phil Foden performed slightly better in the draw against Denmark than he had against Serbia in England’s opening game, Despite calls for Southgate to give Cole Palmer some much-deserved game time, the Chelsea man is likely to start amongst the substitutes once again on Tuesday. If Foden is replaced in the England starting XI then the naturally left-sided Anthony Gordon would offer some much-needed balance to the England front line.

Kieran Trippier is rumoured to be carrying a slight calf injury and with Luke Shaw not yet fit, the stand-in left-back could be rested with any potential knockout game less than a week away.

Slovenian star Benjamin Sesko departed the field early in last week’s draw against Serbia but he has eased any fitness concerns by confirming that he was simply suffering from cramp. We’re expecting the RB Leipzig starlet to start against England but may not see out the full 90 minutes. Elsewhere, midfielder Jon Gorenc Stankovic remains on stand-by with both Timi Max Elsnik and Adam Gnezda Cerin a doubt for Tuesday.

Possible Line Ups

England: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Guehi, Gomez, Bellingham, Rice, Gallagher, Saka, Gordon, Kane

Slovenia: Oblak, Karnicnik, Brekalo, Bijol, Janza, Mlakar, Elsnik, Cerin, Stojanovic, Sporar, Sesko

Betting Tips

England have come under immense pressure after two underwhelming performances from the pre-tournament favourites and we’re expecting a real reaction from Southgate’s Three Lions on Tuesday. England are solid at 7/20 to win the match however there may be better value to be had if anticipating a comprehensive England win. England -1 in the handicap betting looks superb value at Evens whilst the Three Lions are 19/20 to be leading at half-time and full-time.

Slovenia have scored in 14 successive matches but with star forward Benjamin Sesko showing signs of fatigue, their attacking potency will be put to the test against England. We’re confident that England will earn a second clean sheet in three matches on Tuesday, making England to win to nil our bet of the day at 10/11.

Captain Harry Kane is one of several England stars to have come in for real scrutiny over the past few days and the Bayern Munich forward could come out firing on Tuesday. Kane scored his first goal at Euro 2024 in the draw against Denmark but has often been criticised for coming too deep. A more disciplined performance from the England centre forward could see him provide a considerable goal threat in Cologne. Below are just some of the markets where you should consider backing England’s all-time leading goalscorer.
