Euro 2024: Georgia v Portugal - Match Preview & Odds

Georgia will take on Portugal on Wednesday in the final game of a thoroughly entertaining Euro 2024 group stage. Portugal have already guaranteed top spot in Group F whilst Georgia are hoping to keep their faint hopes of progression alive in Gelsenkirchen. Here at betting.bet we’ll preview this key fixture, providing the latest team news, expert betting tips and match analysis as well as the best free bet offers and odds from our partners at BoyleSports.

Euro 2024: Group F Recap

Portugal sit top of Group F with a perfect record of two wins from two matches. The group favourites had to come from behind to defeat Czech Republic 2-1 in their opening fixture but enjoyed a far more comfortable evening against Turkey in Dortmund on Saturday. Goals from Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes either side of a Samet Akaydin own-goal saw Portugal ease to a 3-0 win and leapfrog Turkey at the top of Group F.

Euro 2024 highlights: Turkey 0-3 Portugal

Georgia were expecting to be the Group F whipping boys on their first appearance in a major tournament but the lowest-ranked side in the tournament have more than held their own in both matches they’ve been involved in so far. The 3-1 scoreline flattered Turkey in Georgia’s opening game before they held the Czech Republic to a 1-1 draw in Hamburg on Saturday.

Team News

Rafael Leao misses Wednesday's match through suspension after picking up bookings in each of Portugal’s two group games so far. Pedro Neto is likely to replace the Milan forward in attack but Diogo Jota and Joao Felix will also be considered. Joao Palhinha is one booking away from missing the first knockout game and given that the Portuguese midfielder was carded 13 times in the Premier League last season, he may not be risked against Georgia. Teenage star Joao Neves could be given the nod at the heart of the Portugal midfield.

Joao Neves is not the only top Benfica prospect in line for a starting berth on Wednesday with 20-year-old Antonio Silva likely to start in central defence. 41-year-old defender Pepe should be given a well-earned rest after playing two games in a week and Silva will slot in alongside Ruben Dias.

Georgia are likely to name an unchanged side for their final group game which will mean starting with a 3-4-3 formation with flyers Khvicha Kvaratskheklia and Zuriko Davitashvili lining up either side of Georges Mikautadze in one of the tournament’s most exciting forward lines.

Possible Line Ups

Georgia: Mamardashvili, Kverkveliya, Kashia, Dvali, Kakabadze, Mekvabishvili, Kochorashvili, Tsitaishvili, Davitashvili, Kvaratskhelia, Mikautadze

Portugal: Costa, Semedo, A Silva, Dias, Cancelo, Neves, Palhinha, B Silva, Fernandes, Neto, Ronaldo

Betting Tips

Georgia have won over many fans at Euro 2024 thanks to the no-fear approach to their opening two matches and on Wednesday they know that only a win would be enough to give them a chance of progressing. This is likely to create a wide-open encounter in Gelsenkirchen. Over 2.5 match goals and both teams to score will be equally attractive betting propositions at 11/20 and 4/5 respectively.

Cristiano Ronaldo has rolled back the years in Germany this summer with his performance against Turkey particularly impressive. It seems just a matter of time until football’s greatest ever goalscorer finds the net at Euro 2024 and the Portugal captain is priced at 4/6 to score at any time against Georgia. Alternatively, Ronaldo is 5/2 to score first or 3/1 to score two or more. Cristiano Ronaldo is currently priced at 12/1 to win the Euro 2024 Golden Boot and these odds will shorten considerably if he gets off the mark against Georgia.

Whilst Ronaldo went into the tournament as one of the bookies’ favourites to win the Golden Boot, that certainly wasn’t the case for Georgia’s Georges Mikautadze. However the Metz forward has been one of the breakthrough stars in Germany as one of only three players to score in each of his nation’s first two matches. Having scored in both of Georgia's games so far Mikautadze can be backed at 7/2 to score once more on Wednesday.
