Jenningsbet Northumberland Plate Handicap Preview & Odds

There is a superb day’s racing at Newcastle Racecourse on Saturday with their all-weather course set to host an eight-race Premier Raceday card. The feature race of the afternoon is the Jenningsbet Northumberland Plate Handicap with 20 runners confirmed for this year’s renewal of this much-anticipated race. Here at betting.bet we’ll preview Saturday’s feature, providing race insights and horse racing tips as well as the latest horse racing odds and offers from our partners at NAGS Bet.

Northumberland Plate History

The Northumberland Plate is one of the most prestigious two mile handicap races in the world. Established back in 1833, this race has been contested on Newcastle’s all-weather Tapeta surface since 2016.

Since switching to the AW, the Northumberland Plate has produced three double-figure winners in seven years and only Alan King has trained more than one winner during this time. Last year’s renewal was won by Calling The Wind for trainer Richard Hughes, posting the fastest winning time since 2016.

Pledgeofallegiance Misses Out

Antepost favourite Pledgeofallegiance will not run at Newcastle on Sunday after trainer Sir Mark Prescott decided that the race has come too soon since winning the Ascot Stakes less than two weeks ago.

Trainer Sir Mark Prescott explained,

“No, he won’t run, he had a hard enough race and I think we’ll consider the two-and-a-half-mile handicap at Goodwood and the Cesarewitch and then if he’s lucky enough to win one of those we’d put him away and hope he might become a Cup horse the following year.”

The Market Leader

Whilst Pledgeofallegiance may not be running in this, Sir Mark Prescott still has an excellent chance of success with Trooper Bisdee and True Legend. Hollie Doyle saddled Trueshsan to Northumberland Plate glory in 2022 and she is back this year on board race favourite Trooper Bisdee. The Sir Mark Prescott-trained four-year-old brought up his second straight win on Sunday and returns to the AW on the back of an excellent twelve months on turf. Trooper Bisdee was last seen on an AW course back in November 2022 but has since notched up six wins in nine races. Undoubtedly the one to beat on Saturday despite a 5lbs penalty.

Discussing his two race entries, Sir Mark Prescott said,

“Trooper Bisdee won well at Pontefract (on Sunday), which probably played to his strengths – fast turf and two and a quarter miles. He was always going to win there and will have a 5lbs penalty. He runs and Hollie Doyle will ride. I would have preferred it to be on turf and I would have like a bit of extra distance, but he’s in cracking form and he deserves to have a shot. He goes on any ground except very soft, but he has a huge advantage when it is very firm as he doesn’t mind how firm it is. Often it’s not what your horse wants, it is what disadvantages the others. True Legend will run, he’s been mighty unlucky a couple of times, he deserves one. Up to two miles is an unknown but I think he’ll like the al-weather. Whether he gets two miles is an unknown. Cieren Fallon will ride.”

Big Chances

There are plenty of horses in with a chance on Saturday with the likes of Duke Of Oxford, Grand Providence and Zoffee all well-supported in the market. All three horses met in the Chester Cup last month with Zoffee coming out on top. Zoffee was well-beaten in last year’s renewal of this but everything went right for him at Chester. Up 4lbs for that Chester Cup win but retains an excellent chance. Duke Of Oxford showed very little from a wide draw at Chester but was second off the same mark over C&D in March and could reverse the form against Zoffee.

Yashin is a fascinating entry stepping up in trip. Never raced on the AW and never been beyond 1m6f but was only three lengths off the winner in last year’s Ebor at York and also landed a Group 3 race in 2023. One of the classier horses in the field and could be well in the mix if handling the surface and step up in trip.

Dark Horses

There has been a fair bit of money for Evaluation and Howth recently and both have solid place claims at least. Evaluation is now 4lbs lower than when winning the Northumberland Vase in 2022 and only 2lbs higher than his winning mark at Wolverhampton in April. Howth won his first race since 2021 at Wolverhampton in March before running well off a 4lbs higher mark on AW Championships Day. Retains the same mark now and could build on that form.

Golden Flame is probably the most intriguing entry in his first run for new trainer Deborah Faulkner. Golden Flame has not run for 612 days but was very consistent throughout 2021 and 2022. Now running off his lowest mark since his handicap debut over three years ago.
