Portugal and Slovenia meet in Frankfurt on Monday in the round of 16 at Euro 2024. As we prepare for this tricky looking fixture, here at betting.bet you’ll find the latest team news, betting tips and match insights as well as the best offers and odds from our partners at Coral.
Group Stage Recap
Portugal suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Georgia in their final Group F fixture. However the 2016 European champions had already secured top spot in the group thanks to earlier wins over the Czech Republic (2-1) and Turkey (3-0).
Slovenia scraped through to the knockout stage as the fourth best performing third place sides. In a low quality Group C, Slovenia drew all three group games, following up successive 1-1 draws against Denmark and Serbia by holding England to a 0-0 draw in Cologne.
Team News
Portugal made eight changes to their line up for the shock loss against Georgia and the majority of those rested players should return to their starting XI on Monday. Rafael Leao should also come back in after serving a one-game suspension.
Slovenia will make one enforced change at left-back with Jure Balkovec set to come in for the suspended Erik Janza.
Possible Line Ups
Portugal: Costa, Cancelo, Pepe, Dias, Mendes, Vitinha, Palhinha, Fernandes, B. Silva, Ronaldo, Leao
Slovenia: Oblak, Karnicnik, Drkusic, Bijol, Balkovec, Stojanovic, Elsnik, Gnezda Cerin, Mlakar, Sporar, Sesko
Betting Tips
Back to full-strength after rotating their squad against Georgia, Portugal should prove too strong for Slovenia on Monday and at 7/20 they are very backable to win inside 90 minutes. If they can resume the form shown in their win over Turkey, Portugal to be leading at half-time and full-time could be worth considering at Evens.
Cristiano Ronaldo has so far failed to score at this summer’s European Championships but with 130 international goals to his name it does seem more a case of when and not if the Portugal captain gets himself on the scoresheet. Ronaldo is priced at 4/6 to score at any time on Monday or 11/5 to score first. Alternatively, you could consider Ronaldo at 17/5 to score two or more.
Whilst Ronaldo is in the twilight of an astonishing career, his Slovenian counterpart, Benjamin Sesko has just turned 21. The RB Leipzig forward is one of the hottest prospects in world football yet despite scoring five times in qualifying, Sesko is yet to get off the mark for Slovenia in Germany. You can back Sesko at 9/2 to score at any time on Monday.
Given our belief that both Ronaldo and Sesko will score on Monday, backing both teams to score seems sensible at odds of 13/10 whilst over 2.5 match goals is our bet of the day at 17/20.
