Euro 2024 Form
Spain and Germany have been arguably the most impressive sides at Euro 2024 and both head into Friday’s meeting in red-hot form. Spain have won all four matches so far, escaping the ‘Group of Death’ with Group B wins over Croatia (3-0), Italy (1-0) and Albania (1-0) before coming from a goal down to win 4-1 against surprise package Georgia in the round of 16.
Hosts Germany are the highest scorers at Euro 2024 with ten goals in their four matches so far. Julian Nagelsmann’s side kicked off the tournament with a comprehensive 5-1 win over Scotland in Munich and went on to top Group A thanks to a 2-0 win over Hungary and a 1-1 draw against fellow quarter-finalists Switzerland. In the round of 16, Germany eased to a 2-0 win over Denmark thanks to second-half goals from Kai Havertz (pen) and Jamal Musiala.
Spain v Germany: Head-to-Head
As two of European football’s traditional heavyweights, Spain and Germany have met on no fewer than 26 occasions. Germany have won nine times compared to eight wins for Spain (nine draws). However, Germany have won only one of their last eight matches against Friday’s opponents.
Three of the last four meetings between Spain and Germany have ended in a draw whilst a Ferran Torres hat-trick helped steer Spain to a 6-0 UEFA Nations League win in November 2020. The most recent match between the sides came in the 2022 FIFA World Cup group stage. The match ended 1-1 with Niclas Fullkrug cancelling out Alvaro Morata’s opener; however, Germany would subsequently suffer a second straight FIFA World Cup group stage exit.
Germany’s last win in a competitive international against Spain came at the 1988 European Championships where Rudi Voller brace sealed a 2-0 win.
Team News
The major talking point from a Germany perspective ahead of Friday is whether Bundesliga Player of the Season, Florian Wirtz will earn a recall after he was surprisingly dropped for the win over Denmark. Wirtz was in decent form throughout the group stage but Leroy Sane was given the nod ahead of Wirtz for Germany in the round of 16.
Niclas Fullkrug has scored twice at Euro 2024 already and continues to impress from the bench however Kai Havertz put in a superb shift against Denmark and retains his status as Germany’s first-choice centre forward.
Having served a one-game suspension Jonathan Tah should return to the starting XI on Friday in place of Nico Schlotterbeck. At left-back, David Raum has probably done enough to keep his place in the Germany team ahead of Maximilian Mittelstädt.
Dani Olmo may have played his way into the Spanish starting lineup ahead of Friday’s quarter-final after impressing from the bench against Georgia. Olmo played a starring role in the group stage win over Albania last week and despite starting Sunday’s round of 16 tie on the bench, he made a goal-scoring appearance in the second half and could be in line to start ahead of Pedri against Germany.
The rest of the Spain starting XI looks pretty secure with the exciting Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams set to start either side of Alvaro Morata and Luis de la Fuente seemingly settled on Aymeric Laporte and Robin Le Normand as his preferred central defensive pairing.
Possible Line Ups
Spain: Simon, Cucurella, Laporte, Le Normand, Carvajal, Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Olmo, Williams, Yamal, Morata
Germany: Neuer, Raum, Tah, Rüdiger, Kimmich, Kroos, Andrich, Gundogan, Musiala, Sane, Havertz
Betting Tips
Spain v Germany would’ve been a worthy final at Euro 2024 and Friday’s quarter-final has all the makings of a classic. With so much exciting young talent on show, goals seem an inevitability in Stuttgart. Over 2.5 match goals or both teams to score look equally attractive options at Evens and 8/11 respectively. However, we’re happy to push that further - over 3.5 match goals is tempting at 5/2 whilst both teams to score in both halves looks overpriced at 10/1.
Four of the ten players to have netted two or more goals so far at Euro 2024 will be in action on Friday evening and Jamal Musiala looks the most likely to further add to his tally of three goals in the competition. Musiala has been in red-hot form over Germany’s first four matches and is priced at 15/2 to score first or 16/5 to score at any time on Friday.
Captain Alvaro Morata has not scored since Spain’s opening match at Euro 2024 but the 31-year-old retains an outside chance of winning the Golden Boot. The Atletico Madrid forward will be a real threat to Germany and should be well-supported at 21/10 to score at any time against Germany.
