The Three Lions remain one of the favourites to win the tournament and are now potentially just 180 minutes away from a second successive European Championship final. As we build up to this huge European Championship fixture, here at betting.bet we’ll provide the latest team news, enhanced match insights and expert opinions and betting tips as well as the best pre-match odds and offers from our partners at bet365.
Euro 2024 Form
England have not been anywhere near their best in their four matches so far at Euro 2024, drawing three of the four matches they’ve been involved in up to now. The Three Lions were fortunate to escape with all three points in their opening match as they held on to a 1-0 lead despite significant second-half pressure.
Gareth Southgate’s side went on to top Group C despite drawing against both Denmark (1-1) and Slovenia (0-0). In the round of 16, England pulled off the great escape as a 94th minute equaliser from Jude Bellingham forced extra-time against Slovakia. Harry Kane scored in extra-time to ensure England eventually progressed 2-1.
In contrast, opponents Switzerland have arguably performed better than anticipated so far at Euro 2024. Switzerland kicked off their tournament with a deserved 3-1 win over Hungary and were perhaps a little unfortunate not to have won any of their next two Group A games, recording back-to-back 1-1 draws against Scotland and hosts Germany. In the round of 16, Switzerland were underdogs against holders Italy but completely outplayed their opponents, scoring either side of half-time in a deserved 2-0 win.
England v Switzerland: Head-to-Head
England have an excellent record against Switzerland, winning 19 of their 27 previous matches against Saturday’s opponents. The Three Lions have gone 13 matches without defeat against Switzerland, a run stretching back to a FIFA World Cup qualifier in May 1981.
The most recent meeting between the two nations was a friendly match at Wembley Stadium in March 2022. Breel Embolo gave Switzerland the lead before Luke Shaw and Harry Kane earned England a 2-1 win.
The two nations have met twice in the European Championships. The first European Championships meeting between England and Switzerland came in the opening match of Euro ‘96 as a late penalty saw Switzerland hold England to a 1-1 draw at Wembley Stadium. Ironically, England boss Gareth Southgate played the full 90 minutes that day.
In 2004, England ran out comfortable 3-0 winners against Switzerland thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney (two) and Steven Gerrard. Current Switzerland manager Hakan Yakin was on the losing side in 2004, playing 83 minutes at the Estadio Cidade de Coimbra.
Team News
Gareth Southgate has no fresh fitness concerns but has plenty to ponder ahead of Saturday evening. Kobbie Mainoo has done enough to retain his place in the England midfield but the likes of Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold continue to knock on the door for a place in the starting XI.
Luke Shaw remains a fitness concern for England and is only likely to be fit enough for a place amongst the substitutes. Marc Guehi will sit out Saturday’s quarter-final as he serves a one-game suspension. Ezri Konsa may get the nod to start unless Gareth Southgate opts to move Kyle Walker into central defence.
Switzerland retain a clean bill of health heading into the weekend and will be encouraged by Breel Embolo’s 77 minutes against Italy. The Swiss forward has been managed impeccably after an injury-hit season and will start against England. Silvan Widmer is set to slot back in at right wing-back after sitting out the Italy game throughout suspension.
Possible Line Ups
England: Pickford, Trippier, Stones, Konsa, Walker, Rice, Mainoo, Palmer, Bellingham, Foden, Kane
Switzerland: Sommer, Schar, Akanji, Rodriguez, Aebischer, Freuler, Xhaka, Widmer, Ndoye, Vargas, Embolo

England are yet to get out of second gear in Germany this summer and they could be set for another tough evening on Saturday. The Three Lions have been way off it at Euro 2024 and another nervy game awaits at the weekend. bet365 are offering odds of 7/2 for this quarter-final to go all the way to penalties and this is probably not a bad bet. However, we’re keeping faith with England and we’re happy to tip them at 5/4 to win the tie within 90 minutes albeit under 2.5 match goals is a likely outcome at odds of 1/2.
