Portugal v France: Match Preview & Odds

Portugal and France meet on Friday in a mouth-watering Euro 2024 quarter-final fixture in Hamburg. Whilst neither have set the world alight so far at Euro 2024 they remain, on paper at least, two of the most talented nations at the tournament. As we look ahead to a repeat of the Euro 2016 final, here at betting.bet you’ll find the latest team news, betting tips and predictions as well as the best pre-match odds and offers from our partners at Coral.

Euro 2024 Recap

Portugal edged out Slovenia in the round of 16 by winning the first penalty shootout at Euro 2024. The game had ended goalless after 120 minutes despite a dramatic extra-time that saw a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty saved and Benjamin Sesko squander a massive chance late on for Slovenia.

Euro 2024 highlights: Portugal 0-0 Slovenia (3-0 on penalties)

In the group stage, Portugal had wrapped up top spot in Group F before a much-changed team lost their final group game to Georgia.

France finished second behind Austria in Group D after a series of below-par performances. The two-time European champions defeated Austria 1-0 before back-to-back draws against Netherlands (0-0) and Poland (1-1).

In their first match of the knockout stage France edged past Belgium 1-0 thanks to a Jan Vertonghen own-goal. Didier Deschamps’ side have now played four matches at Euro 2024 and are yet to score from open play. France’s only three goals so far in the tournament came via a Kylian Mbappe penalty and two own goals.

France v Portugal: Head-to-Head

France have a vastly superior head-to-head record having won 19 of 28 matches against Portugal. France have dominated meetings between the nations, losing just one of the last 14 - a run that stretches back to 1975. However, Portugal’s solitary win during that run was a big one as they earned a 1-0 win in the final of Euro 2016.

France and Portugal are set to meet in a third straight European Championship tournament with the most recent match between these two nations coming at Euro 2020. The group game played at the last Euros ended 2-2 with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema scoring two goals apiece.

Team News

Griezmann set to retain his place in the France starting XI
Griezmann set to retain his place in the France starting XI

Antoine Griezmann was recalled to the France starting XI against Belgium after being named amongst the substitutes for their final group game. The Atletico Madrid forward should retain his position alongside Kylian Mbappe and Marcus Thuram in attack. Adrien Rabiot will miss Friday’s quarter-final after the Juventus midfielder was booked for a second straight game against Belgium on Monday. Eduardo Camavinga is likely to start alongside Real Madrid teammate Aurelien Tchouameni and N’Golo Kante.

Portugal could name an unchanged line up for Friday’s quarter-final with no injuries or suspensions picked up in the penalty shootout win over Slovenia. Of the players pushing for a start, Francisco Conceicao looks the most likely to force his way into the starting XI at the expense of Rafael Leao.

Possible Line Ups

France: Maignan, T. Hernandez, Saliba, Upamecano, Kounde, Kante, Camavinga, Tchouameni, Griezmann, Mbappe, Thuram

Portugal: Diogo Costa, Mendes, Pepe, Dias, Cancelo, Vitinha, Palhinha, B. Silva, Fernandes, Leao, Ronaldo

Betting Tips

Both Portugal and France have come in for major criticism throughout their first four matches in Germany. Whilst Portugal have been slightly the better side up to now, we’re backing France to get the job done on Friday. Les Bleus are priced at 13/10 to win inside 90 minutes.

Excluding own goals, France have failed to score a single goal from open play at Euro 2024 and whilst we’re expecting them to progress on Friday, goals are likely to be at a premium in Hamburg. At odds of 8/15 under 2.5 match goals should be given real consideration.

Cristiano Ronaldo has attempted more shots on goal than any other player at Euro 2024 but Portugal’s all-time record scorer is yet to get off the mark. With 130 international goals to his name, surely it’s just a matter of time before Ronaldo scores in Germany. Cristiano Ronaldo is priced generously at 19/10 to score at any time against France.

Pre-tournament Golden Boot favourite Kylian Mbappe has just a single penalty to his name at Euro 2024 but like Cristiano Ronaldo he will again be popular in the goalscorer markets. Mbappe is available at 19/5 to score first or 8/5 to score at any time on Friday.
