Euro 2024: Market Update - Golden Boot Winner
Here at betting.bet we’ll provide an update on the latest Golden Boot odds
This weekend Euro 2024 will reach the quarter-final stage and after 44 thrilling games of football, the race for the Golden Boot remains wide-open. Romelu Lukaku is the only player from the top twenty in the pre-tournament Golden Boot market to have failed to progress beyond the round of 16 however, the market has changed considerably with some of the tournament’s big-hitters misfiring across the first four rounds of matches. Here at betting.bet we’ll provide an update on BoyleSports' latest Golden Boot odds, casting our eye over the players still in contention to land one of the biggest individual awards in international football.
Gakpo The New Golden Boot Favourite
Cody Gakpo has established himself as a vital cog in the Netherlands machine at recent major international tournaments. The Liverpool forward scored three times at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has netted another three already at Euro 2024. Gakpo has a decent record of 12 goals in 28 international appearances and the Netherland’s quarter-final opponents, Turkey are the lowest-ranked side left in the competition.
Gakpo is one of four players to have netted three times at Euro 2024 already but whilst Georges Mikautadze and Ivan Schranz were eliminated at the round of 16 stage, Jamal Musiala remains active in the competition for hosts Germany. The lack of an out-and-out goalscorer was Germany’s main concern ahead of Euro 2024 but the promising Bayern Munich youngster has stepped up with goals against Scotland, Hungary and Denmark.
Musiala is not the only German to have impressed in front of goal this summer with Kai Havertz and Niclas Fullkrug both netting two each. Fullkrug has one of the best goals-per-minute ratios in the tournament but his Golden Boots have been hindered by an inability to break into the Germany starting XI.
Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham have been well off their best for England this summer yet each have managed to score twice in four matches already. The Three Lions are the bookies’ outright favourites to win Euro 2024 and with the winner of their quarter-final tie against Switzerland set to play the winner of Turkey v Netherlands, both players would be confident of adding to their tally before the tournament ends.
Kylian Mbappe was the outright favourite to win the Golden Boot before the tournament started after another prolific campaign for Paris Saint-Germain in France. The 2022 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner had scored 48 goals in 78 internationals before Euro 2024 and was expected to spearhead France’s charge towards European Championships glory for the first time since 2000. However, a broken nose that has resulted in the use of a protective mask coupled with France’s failure to score a goal from open play has not helped his cause. Mbappe remains excellent value at 11/1 to win the Golden Boot but he will have to do things the hard way with France facing a nightmare route to the final.
Cristiano Ronaldo was amongst the favourites to win the Golden Boot before the tournament started but he’s cut a frustrated figure so far in Germany. Ronaldo has attempted more shots on goal than any other player so far at Euro 2024 but he’s yet to score a single goal. Ronaldo’s struggles were epitomised by his dramatic penalty miss in extra-time during Portugal’s 0-0 draw against Slovenia in the round of 16.
