Euro 2024: Market Update - Outright Winners
Before the action resumes on Friday evening here at betting.bet we’ll take the opportunity to reassess the latest outright odds and current bookies’ favourites
The 2024 European Championships continue to gather pace with the eight quarter-finalists now confirmed. As the tournament’s remaining participants take a three-day breather before the action resumes on Friday evening here at betting.bet we’ll take the opportunity to reassess the latest outright odds and current bookies’ favourites across a host of markets. We start with the Euro 2024 outright winners market with odds from our partners at Virgin Bet.
England Remain Favourites
England have underwhelmed in Germany so far this summer with so many of their big names failing to rediscover the club form displayed throughout the 2023/24 campaign. The Three Lions limped through the group stage and only a 95th minute Jude Bellingham equaliser saved them from a shock round of 16 elimination against Slovakia. However a favourable draw in the knockout stage means England remain the bookies’ outright favourites at 4/1. England will play Switzerland in the quarter-final with a semi-final tie against either Turkey or the Netherlands awaiting the winner.
Turkey produced a shock 2-1 win over tournament dark horses Austria in the round of 16 despite captain Hakan Calhanoglu sitting out the match through suspension. Indiscipline could prove Turkey’s undoing with two more players suspended for the quarter-final. Opponents, the Netherlands qualified for the knockout stage as one of the best third placed teams but were well in control of their round of 16 tie as they soundly defeated Romania (3-0). Netherlands are warming nicely into the competition with the likes of Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons starting to hit top gear.
The Tough Half Of The Draw
Whilst England went into Euro 2024 as the bookies’ pre-tournament favourites, the next four in the betting make up the entire other half of the quarter-final draw. France are yet to set the world alight this summer and incredibly no French player has scored from open play in four Euro 2024 matches so far. France’s three goals so far consist of a Kylian Mbappe penalty and two own-goals. Les Bleus take on Portugal on the weekend in a repeat of the 2016 final and the bookies have placed them as slight favourites to win the tie. Portugal edged out Slovenia in the tournament’s only penalty shootout so far and we could be set for another cagey encounter in Hamburg on Friday..
The first of the four quarter-finals to be played would’ve made a worthy final with Spain and hosts Germany arguably the best-performing nations at the tournament so far. Spain are the only nation to retain a 100% record ahead of the quarter-finals thanks to wins over Croatia, Italy, Albania and Georgia. Young wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams have set the tournament alight whilst central midfielders Rodri and Fabian Ruiz have provided Spain with a solid platform. All four players are in contention for Player of the Tournament and we’re expecting another stellar performance from Spain on Friday.
However, if any side is capable of beating this in-form Spain side it is Euro 2024 hosts, Germany. There are so many parallels between these Spanish and German teams and whilst Yamal and Williams have played a starring role for Spain, Germany’s Jamal Musiala has arguably shone brightest of all. This tie could be won and lost in central midfield with Rodri and Fabian Ruiz set to go up against Spain-based duo Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan. The winner of France v Portugal awaits Spain or Germany and any of these four nations would prove worthy winners of next Sunday’s final.
