Euro 2024: Market Update - Player of the Tournament

Euro 2024 has now reached the quarter-final stage and as we look ahead to four more mouth-watering fixtures at the weekend we take a few minutes to reevaluate one of the most popular outright betting markets. The Player of the Tournament market is wide-open with three rounds of matches to play but below we’ll cast our eye over some of the more likely winners of this prestigious individual award. The latest odds are provided by our betting partners at Betfred.

Jamal Musiala has been one of the breakthrough stars at Euro 2024 as the 21-year-old has netted three goals in four matches for hosts Germany en route to the quarter-final. The Bayern Munich attacking midfielder is amongst the favourites to win the Golden Boot and if he steers Germany to a record-breaking fourth European Championship triumph, Musiala would prove a worthy winner of the Player of the Tournament award.

Whilst Musiala is at the beginning of what promises to be a hugely successful career for club and country, two of his compatriots nearing the end of their respective careers are also in contention to be crowned the Player of the Tournament at Euro 2024. Captain Ilkay Gundogan turns 34 in October and he has played a major role in Germany’s charge to the quarter-finals whilst alongside him in the German midfield, Toni Kroos has been almost pass-perfect throughout Germany’s four matches. Kroos is set to retire after Euro 2024 and having clinched a La Liga / Champions League double in 2023/24, Euro 2024 would be the perfect send-off for one of the all-time greats.

Gundogan and Kroos aren’t the only central midfielders defying their advancing years by impressing at Euro 2024. N’Golo Kante has bounced back from two injury-disrupted years to become arguably France’s best player at Euro 2024. The 33-year-old was named player of the match in France’s first two matches against Austria and Netherlands and could again play a starring role in the weekend’s quarter-final against Portugal.

England have not yet got out of second gear at Euro 2024 but thanks to a favourable draw they remain favourites to win the tournament outright. Incredibly, England boast last season’s Player of the Season from the Premier League, La Liga and the Bundesliga and if the Three Lions are to claim their first major silverware since 1966, the likes of Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane will all need to step it up over the next couple of weeks. Kane and Bellingham all remain in contention for the Golden Boot and a couple of solid performances in England’s remaining games will undoubtedly place them in real Player of the Tournament contention. Additionally, Bellingham remains a front-runner for this year’s Ballon d’Or.

Spain have been arguably the most impressive side so far at Euro 2024 and head into the weekend’s quarter-finals as the tournament’s joint-favourites alongside England. Several members of the Spanish squad still possess an excellent chance of being crowned Player of the Tournament. Along with N’Golo Kante and Jude Bellingham, Rodri is one of only three players to have won two Player of the Match awards at Euro 2024 and the Manchester City midfielder’s experience could prove key in a youthful Spain side alongside the likes of Pedri, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams.
