British Grand Prix: A Brief History
The longest-running Formula One race was first contested as the Grand Prix of the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) back in 1926. The British Grand Prix has been a permanent fixture on the race calendar since the inaugural Formula One World Championship was held in 1950.
British drivers have a proud record in their home race, winning a combined 28 British Grand Prix between them. Lewis Hamilton is the most successful driver in the race’s long history, winning eight times between 2008 and 2021. In 2017 Hamilton equalled Jim Clark’s record of four consecutive British Grand Prix victories with the latter winning four in a row between 1962 and 1965.
2023 Recap
Last year’s British Grand Prix saw Red Bull Racing equal McLaren's record of eleven consecutive race wins as Max Verstappen won his sixth of ten successive races during a record-breaking 2023 year. McLaren did show signs of improvement at Silverstone twelve months ago with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri both finishing on the podium.
Formidable Verstappen
Last year’s race winner Max Verstappen enjoyed a phenomenal 2023 season and the Dutchman heads back to Silverstone closing in on a fourth consecutive World Championship title. Verstappen has won seven of the eleven Grand Prix staged already in 2024 to open up an 81-point lead over the chasing pack. The Dominant championship leader will start fourth on the grid on Sunday but remains the bookies’ favourite to win a second straight British Grand Prix.
The British Hopes
British drivers have an excellent record in their home Grand Prix and after a very successful qualifying session, we could be set for another British winner at Silverstone George Russell, Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris completed a British 1-2-3 in qualifying and all three have an excellent chance of winning on Sunday. Russell stormed to pole position and the Austrian Grand Prix winner is eyeing a second straight race win.
George Russell’s Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton lines up on the front row of the grid hoping to end a run of almost three years without a Grand Prix win. Hamilton has not won since taking the chequered flag at the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. However, you cannot rule out a driver with eight British Grand Prix wins to his name.
The third Brit on the grid is McLaren’s Lando Norris. The 24-year-old sits second in the drivers’ standings after 11 races and prior to his disap[ointment at the Austrian Grand Prix last time out, Norris had been one of this season’s most consistent performers. Lando Norris won the Miami Grand Prix and has also finished on the podium in five other races so far this year. Norris was second at Silverstone twelve months ago and will hope to build on his recent good form as he hopes to go one better this weekend.
