Copa America Form
Uruguay reached the last four at the expense of one of tournament favourites as they edged out nine-time winners Brazil on penalties after a 0-0 draw in Nevada.
Prior to that goalless draw against Brazil, Uruguay had scored a tournament-high nine goals in their three group games. Marcelo Bielsa’s side won three from three in Group C including victories over Panama (3-1), Bolivia (5-0) and USA (1-0).
Semi-final opponents Colombia topped Group D ahead of Brazil, Costa Rica and Paraguay thanks to a return of seven points from a possible nine. Colombia earned back-to-back wins against Paraguay (2-1) and Costa Rica (3-0) before rounding off the group with a goalless draw against Brazil.
Colombia earned an emphatic win in their quarter-final as they eased to a comfortable 5-0 win against competition surprise package Panama.
Team News
Marcelo Bielsa has a couple of selection headaches in defence with both Nahitan Nandez and Ronald Araujo missing on Wednesday. Nandez is suspended following his red card in the quarter-final against Brazil whilst Araujo limped out of that game prematurely with a leg injury that is set to keep him sidelined for the rest of the tournament.
Araujo is likely to be replaced in central defence by captain Jose Gimenez whilst Guillermo Varela should come in for Nandez.
The Colombia squad boasts a clean bill of health ahead of Wednesday’s semi-final and after missing the quarter-final through suspension, Jefferson Lerma should slot immediately back into the starting XI against Uruguay.
Possible Line Ups
Uruguay: Rochet, Varela, Gimenez, Olivera, Vina, Valverde, Ugarte, Pellistri, De la Cruz, Araujo, Nunez
Colombia: Vargas, Munoz, Sanchez, Cuesta, Mojica, Rios, Lerma, J. Arias, Rodriguez, Diaz, Cordoba
Uruguay v Colombia: Head-to-Head
Uruguay and Colombia have met on 45 previous occasions with Uruguay edging the head-to-head record with 20 wins compared to 14 for Colombia (11 draws).
The last three matches between the sides have all ended all-square, including a 0-0 draw in the quarter-final of the Copa America held in 2021. Colombia won on penalties three years ago and both subsequent World Cup qualifiers contested by the two nations finished level.
The most recent match between these sides produced an entertaining 2-2 draw. Colombia twice went ahead through James Rodriguez and Mateus Uribe and were twice pegged back by Mathias Olivera and Darwin Nunez.
Betting Tips
Uruguay have been arguably the best side so far at this summer’s Copa America however Colombia are currently enjoying an incredible 27-game unbeaten run. This tie looks tough to call and with their last three meetings finishing level we’re happy to sit on the fence here. The draw is excellent value at 9/5.
Liverpool duo Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez have scored two goals apiece in the tournament and retain an outside chance of winning the Golden Boot, especially with Argentina’s four-goal forward Lautaro Martinez struggling for game time. Both players will prove popular in the goalscorer markets and below are various markets to consider backing either player.
Darwin Nunez | Luis Diaz | |
---|---|---|
To score at any time | 19/10 | 16/5 |
First goalscorer | 17/4 | 13/2 |
Last goalscorer | 17/4 | 13/2 |
To score 2 or more | 10/1 | 20/1 |
To score a hat-trick | 66/1 | 125/1 |
Despite both nations boasting a clean sheet in their respective quarter-final matches, we’re expecting Uruguay v Colombia to be a high-scoring fixture. These semi-finalists are the two highest-scoring nations at this summer’s Copa America having scored a combined 20 goals so far in the USA. Over 2.5 match goals and both teams to score are equally attractive propositions at 7/4 and 11/10 respectively.
