Euro 2024 Quarter-Final Results & Form

Netherlands finished third in Group D behind Austria and France but qualified for the knockout stage as one of the best third place teams. The Oranje kicked off their tournament with a 2-1 win against Poland before drawing 0-0 against France and losing 3-2 to Austria.

Netherlands earned one of the biggest wins of the tournament so far in the round of 16 as they eased to a comfortable 3-0 win over Romania in Munich. In the quarter-final the Netherlands overturned a 1-0 half-time deficit to win 2-1 against Turkey.

Euro 2024 highlights: Netherlands 2-1 Turkey

England have certainly done things the hard way so far at Euro 2024. Having escaped with a narrow 1-0 over Serbia in their opening game, the Three Lions have gone on to draw each of their subsequent four matches in Germany. England drew 1-1 against Denmark and 0-0 against Slovenia but five points was enough to see them top Group C.

England have had to come from behind to draw 1-1 in both knockout games so far. Jude Bellingham equalised in the 95th minute of their round of 16 match against Slovakia before Harry Kane sealed their place in the quarter-final with an early strike in extra-time. England again found themselves behind in the quarter-final as Breel Embolo put Switzerland ahead with just 15 minutes to play. Bukayo Saka equalised five minutes later before the Arsenal winger was amongst England’s goalscorers in their penalty shootout win.

Team News

Ezri Konsa barely put a foot wrong as he deputised for the suspended Marc Guehi against Switzerland but Guehi is likely to step back into the England starting XI on Wednesday.

Gareth Southgate has resisted calls to make wholesale changes right throughout Euro 2024 and Guehi for Konza may be the only change to the England starting line up. Cole Palmer is likely to start amongst the substitutes once again despite another impressive display off the bench against Switzerland. Luke Shaw is now fit enough to start but is unlikely to displace Kieran Trippier in the starting XI.

Wout Weghorst played a crucial role in helping the Netherlands overcome a half-time deficit against Turkey but the forward is unlikely to force his way into the starting line up. One man that may have done enough to earn a starting berth in Donyell Malen. Malen scored twice in the round of 16 win over Romania and the Borussia Dortmund forward will be keen to impress in the ground where he plays his club football.

Possible Line Ups

Netherlands: Verbruggen, Dumfries, De Vrij, Van Dijk, Ake, Schouten, Reijnders, Malen, Simons, Gakpo, Depay

England: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Guehi, Saka, Mainoo, Rice, Trippier, Bellingham, Foden, Kane

Netherlands v England: Head-to-Head

Netherlands have been the better team in recent matches against England, losing just one of the last nine. England’s last win over Netherlands in a competitive international was their famous 4-1 victory at Euro ‘96.

The most recent match between Netherlands and England was a UEFA Nations League semi-final in June 2019. Marcus Rashford had given England the lead before Matthijs de Ligt equalised in the second half. The Netherlands would eventually win 3-1 after extra-time.

Betting Tips

England are the bookies’ favourites to reach Sunday’s final despite not yet hitting top gear in Germany. England are priced at 13/8 to win inside 90 minutes. The Three Lions will want to end their trend of falling behind in each knockout game they’ve contested on Wednesday and this makes England to be leading after 30 minutes an excellent betting proposition against the Netherlands at odds of 7/2.

Wednesday’s semi-final features two of the market leaders in the Golden Boot race with both Cody Gakpo and Harry Kane set to feature in Dortmund. Gakpo is the joint-highest goalscorer in the competition with three goals so far whilst Kane has netted twice already. Below are odds relating to both Gakpo and Kane in the various goalscorer markets.

With both Kane and Gakpo tipped as potential goal scorers on Wednesday, we're quietly optimistic of seeing this semi-final fixture producing a high number of goals. Over 2.5 match goals is a solid price at 6/4 whilst both teams to score is worth real consideration at odds of 21/20.
