Newmarket Racecourse’s July Festival will take place between Thursday and Saturday this week and one of the most hotly-anticipated races of the meeting is Friday’s Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes. The Falmouth Stakes is the feature race on day two of the meeting and this year’s race looks a red-hot renewal. Here at betting.bet we’ll assess the chances of some of the race’s major players, providing tips and race insights as well as the best horse racing odds and free bet offers from our partners at Ladbrokes.
Falmouth Stakes History & Overview
The Falmouth Stakes was established back in 1911 and has held Group 1 status since 2004. Now held on day two of the July Festival, the Falmouth Stakes is open to fillies and mares aged three years and above.
Notable recent winners of the race include Goldikova (2009), Integral (2014) and Alpha Centauri (2018). Last year’s race was won by Nashwa for trainers John and Thady Gosden. John Gosden has now trained three Falmouth Stakes winners having previously won the race with both Elusive Kate (2013) and Nazeef (2020).
The Market Leader
Porta Fortuna is the bookies’ favourite for Friday’s feature race following a superb win in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. The Donnacha O’Brien-trained three-year-old enjoyed a fine juvenile season in 2023, winning three Group-level races, most notably the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes on Newmarket’s Rowley course. Ran a close second in the 1000 Guineas on her first run of the season, losing by a neck to Elmalka in May but went one better to land the Coronation Stakes in stylish fashion. Alpha Centauri was the last horse to complete a Coronation Stakes / Falmouth Stakes double.
Major Players
Whilst Porta Fortuna is a worthy favourite based on her Royal Ascot form, winning this is far from a formality. The main danger is likely to be Running Lion for last year’s winning yard. 4/4 over Friday’s 1m trip, most recently when earning a 2l victory in the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Ascot. The ground is the main concern for the Gosden-trained four-year-old. Running Lion has contested three Group-level races on soft or good to soft and has been well-beaten on each occasion.
A Lilac Rolla claimed the notable scalp of Opera Singer in a fillies juvenile race at the Curragh last August before defeating the likes of Kitty Rose and Buttons to land a Group 3 over 7f at Leopardstown in April. Her only run over 1m saw her finish a distant second to Fallen Angel in the Irish 1000 Guineas but she has to be respected on Friday.
Rogue Millennium would be right in the mix based on her best form but she has been a beaten favourite on both runs so far this year. Finished over 4 lengths adrift of Running Lion in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes and reversing that form looks a big ask.
