The three-day July Festival comes to a conclusion at Newmarket on Saturday with a seven-strong card including the Group 1 July Cup. There are 12 runners confirmed for the day’s feature race and here at betting.bet we’ll preview one of Britain’s most prestigious sprint races by providing race analysis, form and betting tips as well as the latest horse racing betting odds courtesy of our betting partners at Unibet.
July Cup History & Overview
The July Cup Stakes was established back in 1876 and is now one of Britain’s richest sprint races with this year’s winner set to earn in excess of £340,000. Contested over 6f, the July Cup Stakes is open to horses aged three years and over. The July Cup-winning horse is often considered Europe’s champion sprinter and recent winners of the race include Starspangledbanner, Dream Ahead, Muhaarar and Harry Angel.
Last year’s renewal was won by Shaquille for trainer Julie Camacho with the three-year-old finishing clear of the likes of Run To Freedom, Kinross and Art Power twelve months ago.
Inisherin Tipped To Shine
Shaquille won at Newmarket last year just a few weeks on from success in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot and on Saturday, this year’s Commonwealth Cup winner has been tipped to tread a similar path. Inisherin was outstayed in the 2000 Guineas but has looked far more comfortable since dropping back to 6f. Won the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock in style before following up with a commanding win in the Commonwealth Cup ahead of the likes of Lake Forest and Jasour.
Leading Players
Vandeek went off odds-on favourite for the Sandy Lane Stakes and despite finishing four lengths off Inisherin at Haydock he commands respect here. 4/4 as a two-year-old and will welcome the return to good ground on Saturday. Winner of two Group 1 races last year, including the Middle Park Stakes on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile.
Regional won the Group 1 Betfair Sprint Cup last September and having finished second in successive Group-level races this year he should be right in the mix on Saturday. Clipper Stakes winner Mill Stream is another leading player following last month’s solid third in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. Khaadem won the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes but has been unsuccessful in each of the last two renewals of the July Cup.
Khaadem is not the only loser from 2023 to return for another July Cup tilt with four of last year’s runners entered this year. Kinross has the best chance of the quartet having finished a close third in 2023. Kinross followed up with a couple of Group 2 wins in the Lennox and City of York Stakes before finishing a credible second in successive Group 1s in the autumn. Seasonal reappearance saw him finish second in a Group 3 on Newcastle’s all-weather last month.
Jasour is one of only two C&D winners in the race having won the Group 2 July Stakes at last year’s festival and would’ve been a lot closer to Inisherin in the Commonwealth Cup were it not for a slow start. River Tiber steps back down to 6f following two runs over longer trips this summer. Finished a credible third in the Irish 2000 Guineas before fading away in the closing stages of the 7f Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot. 6f definitely the preferred trip for this Aidan O’Brien-trained three-year-old and he cannot be completely ruled out on Saturday.
