Road To The Final

Spain have undoubtedly been the standout team in Germany this summer and head into Sunday’s final as the bookies’ favourites to win a record-breaking fourth European Championship title. La Roja came through the ‘Group of Death’ with maximum points as they topped Group B without conceding a goal. Spain started their tournament with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Croatia before successive 1-0 wins over Italy and Albania.

In the round of 16, surprise package Georgia took a shock lead in Cologne before Spain bounced back to win 4-1 thanks to goals from Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo.

Spain defeated hosts Germany in the quarter-final thanks to a Mikel Merino goal in the last minute of extra-time. The tie was level at 1-1 after 90 minutes as Florian Wirtz struck late to cancel out Dani Olmo’s opener. Spain would eventually win 2-1 after extra-time.

In the semi-final, Spain again won 2-1 but this tie against France was settled inside the traditional 90 minutes. Lamine Yamal became the youngest ever scorer at a European Championships as he cancelled out Randal Kolo Muani’s early opener. Dani Olmo scored the winner with his third goal in as many matches.

England went into Euro 2024 as the outright favourites but may count themselves fortunate to have made it through to Sunday’s final after some very underwhelming performances so far. England topped Group C but won just one of their three group games. The Three Lions won 1-0 against Serbia thanks to an early Jude Bellingham header but successive draws against Denmark (1-1) and Slovenia (0-0) was met with real discontent amongst the travelling England fans.

With pressure building, England looked on course for a premature exit as Slovakia looked on course for a shock round of 16 win. Slovakia took the lead in the 25th minute and led 1-0 right up until Jude Bellingham’s dramatic 95th bicycle forced extra-time. Harry Kane scored an England second early into extra-time and they held on for a 2-1 win.

England once again fell behind in the quarter-final with Breel Embolo putting Switzerland ahead with 75 minutes on the clock. The Swiss lead lasted five minutes before Bukayo Saka drew England level. There were to be no further goals in extra-time but England won 5-3 on penalties to set up a semi-final meeting with the Netherlands.

England went behind for the third successive game in their semi-final against the Netherlands as Xavi Simons scored one of the goals of the tournament after just seven minutes. VAR came to England’s rescue eleven minutes later as they were handed a hugely controversial penalty kick which was converted by Harry Kane. As extra-time closed in, substitute Ollie Watkins struck a last-gasp winner in a 2-1 win for England.

Team News

Spain’s back line should be bolstered by the return from suspension of both Robin Le Normand and Dani Carvajal on Sunday after both players sat out the semi-final win over France. Nacho and Jesus Navas are likely to make way. Dani Olmo will start once again having taken his opportunity to replace injured midfielder Pedri with both hands.

Captain Alvaro Morata gave Spain an almighty fright in the aftermath of their semi-final win over France. The Atletico Madrid forward suffered a freak knee injury in a collision with a steward trying to detain a pitch invader. Whilst visibly limping after the incident, Morata has trained with no ill-effects since.

After two successful run outs from the bench, Luke Shaw could be in line to start his first game of the tournament on Sunday. With Gareth Southgate reluctant to make too many changes throughout the competition, Shaw for Trippier is likely to be the only change to the England starting XI.

Possible Line Ups

Spain: Simon, Carvajal, Le Normand, Laporte, Cucurella, Ruiz, Rodri, Olmo, Williams, Yamal, Morata

England: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Guehi, Shaw, Mainoo, Rice, Saka, Bellingham, Foden, Kane

Spain v England: Head-to-Head

England have a slight edge in previous internationals between Sunday’s two finalists, winning 14 of their 27 matches compared to 10 wins for Spain with 3 draws. England’s record against Spain is particularly impressive in four previous European Championship meetings. The Three Lions won home and away in qualifying for the 1968 Euros whilst they also won 2-1 in the group stage of the 1980 tournament. The most recent European Championship fixture between Spain and England finished goalless with England winning 4-2 on penalties in Euro ‘96. Current manager Gareth Southgate was in the England line up in 1996.

The most recent international played between Spain and England was a UEFA Nations League game in October 2018. England won 3-2 thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling (two) and Marcus Rashford. Only 5 of the 22 players that started that Nations League have been included in the squads for their respective nations at Euro 2024.

The Golden Boot Contenders

The Euro 2024 Golden Boot race is set to go down to the wire, especially with UEFA confirming that the award will be shared by any players that finish level at the top of the scoring charts. In previous European Championships where players have finished level on goals, the total number of assists provided has been used to determine the Golden Boot winner. The new rules mean we currently have six players in line for a share of the award with Dani Olmo, Harry Kane, Cody Gakpo, Georges Mikautadze, Jamal Musiala and Ivan Schranz all level on three goals apiece.

However, both Harry Kane and Dani Olmo will move clear at the summit if they score at any time on Sunday. Olmo has scored in all three knockout games so far whilst England captain Harry Kane has also netted three times. Jude Bellingham and Fabian Ruiz have scored two goals each and also remain in contention for the award. Either player would win at least a share of the Golden Boot by out-scoring both Olmo and Kane.

Below are the latest Golden Boot charts and odds as well as the latest goalscorer odds relating to all four contenders for the award involved on Sunday.

Betting Tips

Spain have been the best team at Euro 2024 by some distance and are worthy favourites but England have shown signs in the last two games that they’re starting to look. A back three has certainly helped get the best out of the likes of Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka and Gareth Southgate’s side look great value to win at 12/5.

England have gone behind in all three knockout games they’ve been involved in and Spain are very generously priced at 19/20 to score first in Berlin. Ladbrokes are offering 15/2 on either team to be leading and lose in 90 minutes whilst both teams to score looks a solid bet at Evens.
