Next England Manager Odds - The Market Reacts To Southgate Resignation
As the FA look to move quickly to appoint a successor, here at betting.bet we take a look at some of the early front-runners
Gareth Southgate has resigned as England manager just two days after steering them to a second successive European Championship final defeat. The Three Lions will have to shake off their Euro 2024 disappointment sooner rather than later with their 2024/25 UEFA Nations League campaign set to kick off in less than two months. As the FA look to move quickly to appoint a successor, here at betting.bet we take a look at some of the early front-runners with England football betting odds from bookmakers BetVictor.
Potter The Market Leader
Graham Potter has been installed as the bookies’ favourite to replace Southgate and the 49-year-old could be a straightforward option given that he has been unemployed since departing Chelsea 15 months ago. Potter has long been suggested as a future England manager, especially during his time at Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Clamour For A Big Name
The one major question mark over the appointment of Graham Potter would be his underwhelming tenure at Chelsea. Potter was deemed to have struggled with the size of the task at hand at Stamford Bridge and that pressure and media attention is only going to intensify if appointed England manager. The pressure of the big job is not something that will affect Potter’s Chelsea predecessor Thomas Tuchel and the German is also jobless following his summer departure from Bayern Munich.
Tuchel is not the only unemployed German with a huge reputation both in England and overseas and the name of Jurgen Klopp has been floated about as a possible successor to Gareth Southgate ever since he announced his decision to leave Liverpool this summer. The hugely popular and charismatic Klopp won every trophy available during a successful Liverpool reign and he would certainly prove a popular appointment as England manager.
A Chelsea Connection
Incredibly, four of the top seven in the betting are former Chelsea managers. In addition to Potter and Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino and Frank Lampard are in the running for the England job. Pochettino’s relationship with several England stars, most notably Harry Kane is a major positive whilst Frank Lampard is one of England’s greatest ever midfield players. He doesn’t have the greatest record in club football but is well-respected by players and the media alike - Lampard certainly fits the ‘Southgate’ mould.
Carsley Continuity
Talking of fitting the Southgate mould, Lee Carsley could follow in Southgate’s footsteps by stepping up from the England under-21s to take on the managerial role with the senior team. Carsley has been England under-21 manager since 2021 and guided them to glory in last year’s European Under-21 Championships. The likes of Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon and Jarrad Branthwaite starred under Carsley in last summer’s tournament and they could feature prominently for Southgate’s successor in the coming years.
Eddie Howe has often been considered as a future England manager yet despite further enhancing his reputation with a solid first two seasons at NEwcastle United, his odds of replacing Southgate seem to be on the slide. This is presumably more due to the cost and difficulties of prising him away from St James Park, especially with so many of the other front-runners readily available.
