We have an exciting two-day meeting at the Curragh this weekend with one of the Irish Classics set to take centre stage. The Group 1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks will be the feature race on Saturday and as we look forward to one of highlights of Ireland’s flat racing calendar, here at betting.bet you’ll find a comprehensive preview of the race including betting tips, race insights and the latest horse racing odds from our partners at bet365.
Irish Oaks - Race Overview
The Irish Oaks was first contested in 1895 and now takes place in July each year. The Group 1 race is contested over 1m4f at the Curragh and open to three-year-old fillies. The race is the Irish equivalent of Epsom’s famous Oaks whilst leading Irish Oaks entries often follow up by contesting the Yorkshire Oaks at York Racecourse a month later.
Aidan O’Brien is the race’s most successful ever trainer with seven Irish Oaks victories whilst jockey Johnny Murtagh boasts six previous race wins. Savethelastdance gave Aidan O’Brien a seventh race win twelve months ago either side of a second place finish in the Betfred Oaks and third in the Yorkshire Oaks.
O’Brien Eyeing Win Number Eight
Aidan O’Brien’s dominant Ballydoyle yard have three confirmed entries for this year’s Irish Oaks including the top two in the betting with both Content and Port Fairy possessing an excellent chance of winning.
Content has already enjoyed Group-level success at the Curragh having won the Group 3 Staffordstown Stud Stakes over 1m last October. Content was third in the Pretty Polly Stakes last time out and now steps up to 1m4f for the first time. Port Fairy has already won over Saturday’s trip when landing the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot last time out. On paper she looks more than capable of winning this but Ryan Moore has opted to ride Content instead. Rubies Are Red is the third O’Brien entry in this race but she was over 13 lengths adrift of Port Fairy at Ascot and surely offers place claims at best.
Leading Contenders
Willie Mullins and Wathnan Racing look a formidable team therefore Lope De Lilas has to be respected as she makes a bold step up in class on Saturday. Comfortable winner of a fillies maiden race at Leopardstown in May and certainly capable of making further progress here.
Based on her Ascot form, Lava Stream looks way overpriced here. The David O’Meara-trained prospect was just a neck off Port Fairy in the Ribblesdale yet she is currently trading at around double the odds of the O’Brien horse.
Dare To Dream is bidding to become the first French winner of the Irish Oaks since 2013 and she heads back to the Curragh having enjoyed mixed results since finishing third behind Content in the Staffordstown Stud Stakes. Winner of the Group 3 Prix Vanteaux over 1m1f but did not get involved when trailing home fourth in the Prix Saint-Alary next time out. Encouraging signs when running on gamely to finish 2½ lengths off the race winner in the Group 1 Prix de Diane Longines last month and certainly has to be respected.
