Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap
TONY MONTANA - 14/1
Enfjaar is a worthy favourite for the opening race on Tuesday having landed the John Smith’s Cup at York earlier this month. The lightly-raced four-year-old is two from two now in 2024 and will give another good account for in-form trainer Roger Varian. Up another 6lbs since that win at York two weeks ago but will take some beating.
According to the latest betting, the main danger is Real Gain for trainer Richard Hughes but we’re not convinced. Owners Wathnan Racing enjoyed a hugely successful Royal Ascot meeting yet Real Gain is one of theirs that bombed at the meeting. Well-backed into 9/1 but trailed home 28/29 to post a second successive ‘zero’. Down 2lbs on Tuesday but there are better prospects in this.
One horse that probably looks overpriced is Bystander for trainer Karl Burke. All three wins have come on the AW including last time out at Newcastle. He did put in an eye-catching run over 1m at Newmarket in May and cannot be completely ruled out here.
Whilst we respect the chances of the current race favourite to land the day’s opener, we believe the dark horse in the field could be Tony Montana in the Amo Racing colours. The form of Michael Bell’s yard is a concern but Tony Montana retains a real chance of landing this. Kicked off the year with wins at Chester and Windsor before failing to see out the trip in the 1m4f Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot. Back down to 1m2f last time out and came out of the pack to run on gamely for third behind Enfjaar in the John Smith’s Cup. Having been nudged up just 1lb for that run, he meets Enfjaar on far better terms on Tuesday and could reverse that York form at Goodwood.

HKJC World Pool Vintage Stakes (Group 2)
ELECTROLYTE - 8/1
Electrolyte was well-held in the July Stakes at Newmarket but should be suited to the step up to 7f on Tuesday. Second in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and will be right in the mix at Goodwood based on the form. Cool Hoof Luke was a close fourth at Ascot but it was certainly Electrolyte that looked more capable of taking on an extra furlong.
Aidan O’Brien has trained the winner of this race three times in the past ten years and his entry The Parthenon has to be respected under Ryan Moore. Contested a Group 3 race on debut before landing a maiden at Gowran Park ahead of a rival that holds a Group 1 entry later this year.

HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2)
KINROSS - 10/3
Kinross is back for a fourth tilt at the Lennox Stakes and he remains the one to beat on Tuesday. Boasts two wins and a second in three runs in this race and will welcome the return to 7f having made no impression in the July Cup. This year’s lineup promises to go a fair gallop on Tuesday and that pace may suit Kinross under leading jockey Rossa Ryan.
Noble Dynasty heads to Goodwood in superb form and the six-year-old has been excellent since dropping to 7f. Success in the Criterion Stakes in June was a fourth win in five races and this improving Godolphin entry is certainly one for the shortlist on Tuesday.

Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
KYPRIOS - 2/5
The feature race on day one of the meeting is likely to produce the first odds-on favourite with crown favourite Kyprios set to continue his sensational return to form in 2024. After an injury-hit 2023, Kyprios has been back and as good as ever this year as he continues to tread the same successful path taken in 2022. In both 2022 and 2024 Kyprios opened the year by landing the Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan before winning the Group 3 Saval Beg Levmoss Stakes at Leopardstown followed by the Gold Cup at Ascot. He now heads back to Goodwood hoping to regain the Goodwood Cup and he will take some beating on Tuesday.
The main danger is likely to be Sweet William for trainers John and Thady Gosden. The five-year-old ran on to finish third in the Gold Cup and he should be closer to Kyprios than he was at Ascot but he’s likely to have to settle for minor places once more at Goodwood.
