Who will win the 2024/25 Premier League title?
The return of the Premier League is now just one week away and as we build towards what promises to be a wide-open campaign, here at betting.bet we’re going to focus on the league’s outright betting markets. Starting with the title race, our outright betting preview includes football odds from our partners at BoyleSports.
2023 Recap
Manchester City won a record-breaking fourth successive Premier League title in 2023/24 as Pep Guardiola’s side broke Arsenal’s hearts for a second successive season. Arsenal have lost just one league game since the turn of the year but they finished second once again with 89 points from their 38 matches. Champions Manchester City recorded 91 points and scored a league-high 96 goals in their 38 league games. Liverpool finished third on 82 points whilst surprise package Aston Villa rounded off the top four on 62 points.
It was a Premier League season to forget for Chelsea and Manchester United as they finished sixth and eighth respectively. Tottenham Hotspur (fifth), Newcastle United (seventh), West Ham United (ninth) and Crystal Palace (tenth) rounded off the top half.
The Title Favourites
Manchester City are the bookies’ favourites to win the league for an unprecedented fifth season in a row but there are suggestions that Pep Guardiola’s side may finally be on the decline. Julian Alvarez has completed a big-money move to Atletico Madrid and rumours linking goalkeeper Ederson with a switch to Saudi Arabia will not go away. Many of City’s established stars are now nearing the end of their respective careers at the very top with Kevin de Bruyne, Kyle Walker, John Stones, Mateo Kovacic, Bernardo Silva and Joao Cancelo all now on the wrong side of 30.
In a relatively quiet transfer window so far, Manchester City’s only notable acquisition was 20-year-old Brazil international Savinho who signed for £25m from French side Troyes. Fringe players Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Sergio Gomez and Tommy Doyle have all departed the Etihad whilst there could be some further ins and outs at Manchester City before the window closes.
Main Challengers
Arsenal will again be the main challengers to Manchester City as they aim to go one better than the second place finish achieved in successive seasons. Mikel Arteta’s side have been relatively quiet in the transfer market with very little activity in or out of the Emirates. Riccardo Calafiori has been acquired for £42m on the back of an impressive season at Bologna and some solid performances for Italy at Euro 2024. Arsenal’s only other inbound transfer activity this summer has seen goalkeeper David Raya make his loan move from Brentford a permanent one. Emile Smith Rowe has departed for Fulham.
Arsenal boasted the league’s best defensive record last season but their lack of a real out-and-out goalscorer remains a cause for concern. Kai Havertz is likely to lead the line for Arsenal this season but will have to improve on last season’s return of 13 goals in 37 Premier League games.
Liverpool begin life without Jurgen Klopp this season with Arne Slot the new main man at Anfield for 2024/25. There was a huge gulf between the top three and the chasing pack in the Premier League last season and assuming Arne Slot maintains the standards set by Jurgen Kloop at Liverpool we could be set for a three-horse title race again this coming season.
The Reds are expected to be fairly active in the last couple of weeks of the transfer window but at the time of writing they’re yet to sign a single player since Klopp’s departure. One of the biggest challenges facing Arne Slot is trying to accommodate all of their attacking players. Mo Salah, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz are all seemingly competing for three starting spots. Liverpool’s encouraging pre-season has seen them earn big wins over the likes of Arsenal (2-1), Manchester United (3-0) and Sevilla (4-1).
The ‘Big Six’
Whilst Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool seem nailed on for another top four finish in the Premier League, the other three members of the league’s so-called ‘Big Six’ have to improve on last season if they are to get anywhere near the leading trio in 2024/25. Manchester United decided to stick with Erik ten Hag this summer and have backed their man with several new summer signings. The Red Devils finished eighth last season with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Casemiro, Mason Mount, Luke Shaw and Antony enduring a torrid campaign for one reason or another. However, most Manchester United fans would prefer to see ten Hag build his side around youngsters such as Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, Rasmus Hojlund and Amad Diallo as well as new signings Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro.
The transfer merry-go-round at Chelsea has continued with another summer or relentless comings and goings. Enzo Maresca has replaced Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea manager and the Blues have snapped up the likes of Pedro Neto, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Omari Kellyman already. There could be plenty more summer acquisitions at Stamford Bridge but further signings probably hinge on Chelsea’s ability to offload the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Conor Gallagher, Armando Broja and Trevoh Chalobah. Cole Palmer will again be Chelsea’s key player after following up an excellent debut season at the club with some eye-catching displays at Euro 2024.
Spurs finished fifth last season, just two points off the top four but having finished as the lowest-scoring side in the top seven, they have responded by shelling out £65m on Dominic Solanke from AFC Bournemouth. Solanke scored 19 times in the league last season and will help to fill the void left by last summer’s departure of all-time top scorer Harry Kane. Archie Gray will be one to watch having moved from Leeds United whilst James Maddison will be raring to go following an extended rest having been overlooked by England for Euro 2024.
An Outside Chance
Aston Villa’s remarkable transformation under Unai Emery continued last season as they claimed their first top four finish since 1995/96. As they prepare for a Champions League campaign, Emery has been well-backed by the Aston Villa board with the likes of Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen and Samuel Iling-Junior arriving at Villa Park whilst former Academy stars Cameron Archer and Jaden Philogene have re-signed for the club. Big-money departures for Douglas Luiz and Moussa Diaby have helped to balance the books whilst Aston Villa are rumoured to be interested in Joao Felix, Giovani Lo Celso and Lutsharel Geertruida.
Another manager being well-supported by his board in the transfer market is new West Ham United boss Julen Lopetegui. Only the three relegated clubs conceded more goals than West Ham United in last season’s Premier League and shoring up their defence was seen as a priority. Max Kilman has joined in a big-money move from Wolves whilst previous Manchester United target Jean-Clair Todibo moves from Nice. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also rumoured to be close to a move to the London Stadium from Manchester United. The Hammers have also snapped up the likes of Crysensio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug and Luis Guilherme ahead of the new season. German international Fullkrug will hope to end a run of big-name strikers to flop at West Ham United.
