- Newport County to win (27/20)
Preston North End v Luton Town
Luton Town to win - 59/50
Preston North End have endured a disastrous start to the new Sky Bet Championship season, losing back-to-back league games without scoring a single goal. Ryan Lowe resigned as manager after just one game and now Paul Heckingbottom is the man at the helm at Deepdale. Heckingbottom is experienced at this level but may have to wait to register his first win in charge at Preston as recently-relegated Luton Town make the trip up to Lancashire on Saturday.
Luton Town were on the wrong end of a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Burnley on the opening weekend of the new season before limping to a goalless draw at Portsmouth last week. The Hatters remain amongst the favourites for promotion and showed enough in their draw at Fratton Park to suggest they’ll take all three points from Saturday’s trip to Preston.
Watford v Derby County
Watford to win - 22/25
Watford have flown out of the traps this season to build on a solid end of the season under new manager Tom Cleverley. The Hornets have won two from two in the Championship, taking all three points from an away trip to Millwall (3-2) and a home fixture against Stoke City (3-0) last weekend. Watford also eased to a 5-0 EFL Cup win over MK Dons in the middle of those league games to make it three wins and eleven goals in three competitive fixtures this season.
Derby County finished last season with just two wins from their last six away games and continued in similarly poor fashion this season, going down 4-2 at Blackburn Rovers on the opening weekend of the season. The Rams bounced back to win 1-0 at home to Middlesbrough but we’re expecting another defeat on the road to be inflicted on them this weekend.
Huddersfield Town v Shrewsbury Town
Huddersfield Town to win - 7/20
There are four sides boasting a 100% record in League One and this weekend two of those sides come up against teams that have started their respective campaigns with back-to-back defeats. Whilst Crawley Town may come up short against Wigan Athletic, we are backing Huddersfield Town to make it three wins from three. The Terriers were relegated from the Championship last season and moved to appoint Michael Duff as their new manager and despite his difficult spell in charge at Swansea City, Duff is a highly respected manager at this level.
Chesterfield v Salford City
Chesterfield to win - 11/20
Chesterfield were the runaway winners of the National League last season and are hoping to follow Wrexham in earning a second successive promotion. The Spireites kicked off their return to the Football League with a nervy 1-1 draw at home to Swindon Town but were excellent last weekend as they blew Crewe Alexandra away with a 5-0 away win.
Salford City are expected to struggle this season and have started their campaign with just one point and no goals from their first two matches. Salford City drew 0-0 away at Bradford City last time out but were largely outplayed in West Yorkshire. Chesterfield should take all three points from Saturday’s home tie against Salford City.
Newport County v Accrington Stanley
Newport County to win - 27/20
Newport County bounced back from their last-gasp defeat at Cheltenham Town to earn an impressive 3-1 win at home to much-fancied Doncaster Rovers. Doncaster actually took the lead in South Wales but the hosts bounced back with three second half goals to shock one of the bookies’ title favourites.
Nelson Jardim is the new manager in charge at Newport County and the former Swansea City and Birmingham City assistant is already starting to put his stamp on The Exiles. Despite finishing a lowly 18th last season and failing to spend a penny on transfers in the summer, Newport County could prove to be one of the division’s surprise packages this season. On Saturday they host an Accrington Stanley side that have conceded then goals in three matches this season and lost 4-1 at Doncaster Rovers in their only previous away league game. All three points should go to the home side at Rodney Parade.
