Manchester United v Liverpool: Match Preview & Odds

There’s a huge Premier League fixture taking place at Old Trafford on Sunday as Manchester United host their fierce rivals Liverpool. As we look ahead to a fixture that often delivers real drama, here at betting.bet you’ll find the latest team news, match insights and betting tips as well as the best pre-match football betting odds from our partners at William Hill.

Form

Manchester United have already fallen behind the early pacesetters following a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend. Erik ten Hag’s side had kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 win over Fulham and a return of three points from two matches with a 0 goal difference leaves the Red Devils sitting in eleventh in the Premier League table.

In contrast, Arne Slot has kicked off his Liverpool tenure in dream fashion, winning both Premier League games played so far without conceding a single goal. The Reds earned a 2-0 win at Ipswich Town on the opening weekend before beating Brentford at Anfield by the same scoreline last weekend.

Team News

Mason Mount was hooked at half-time last weekend in favour of summer signing Joshua Zirkzee and that change could be implemented from the start on Sunday. Zirkzee is not the only summer recruit pushing for a starting berth, Matthijs de Ligt could also get the nod to start against Liverpool. Rasmus Hojlund and Luke Shaw are amongst those still missing for the Red Devils.

Arne Slot looks to have settled on his preferred starting XI already and Liverpool are likely to remain unchanged for their trip to Old Trafford. Trent Alexander-Arnold was not happy to have been subbed off in the win over Brentford but he is likely to start on right back once more for Lierpool whilst their preferred front three features Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Luiz Diaz - Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo will be amongst the substitutes.

Manchester United v Liverpool: Head-to-Head

Both league games between Manchester United and Liverpool last season ended all-square, drawing 0-0 at Anfield before playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Old Trafford in April. Luis Diaz handed Liverpool a half-time lead before goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo turned the tie on its head. Mohamed Salah scored an 84th minute penalty to earn Liverpool a share of the spoils.

Prior to last season, Liverpool had enjoyed a period of domination against Manchester United, winning six and drawing three out of the last ten Premier League games.

Betting Tips

Manchester United hold home advantage on Sunday but underwhelmed against both Fulham and Brighton & Hove Albion. Liverpool look excellent value at 17/20 to take all three points back to Merseyside. A big win for Liverpool would certainly crank up the pressure on Erik ten Hag and the Dutchman is already starting to look vulnerable in the Premier League’s sack race. Ten Hag to be the first manager to leave his post is currently priced at 7/1 but this could shorten further if Sunday does not go the way of the hosts.

Manchester United’s major problem last season was scoring goals therefore the Red Devils will take some encouragement from the fact that they have scored in both league games already this season. Whilst Liverpool have kept back-to-back clean sheets under Arne Slot, we are tipping both teams to score at a very generous 2/5.

Combining both of the bets mentioned above is a great way to boost your odds; Liverpool to win and both teams to score is priced favourably at 19/10.

Mohamed Salah’s phenomenal record against Manchester United coupled with the Egyptian’s solid start to the new campaign makes him an obvious choice in Sunday’s goalscorer markets. Salah has scored 14 goals in Liverpool’s last 11 matches in all competitions against Manchester United and should be backed to score at any time on Sunday. Alternatively, you can enhance your winning by backing Salah to score first or to score two or more.
