EFL Acca - Saturday Special (31st August)
Burnley, Stoke City, Huddersfield Town, Birmingham City & Newport County to win - 40/1
We have another full complement of EFL fixtures taking place between Friday and Monday of this week. The action kicks off at Kenilworth Road on Friday evening as Luton Town eye their first win of the season when they host QPR in the Sky Bet Championship. With the majority of fixtures throughout the Championship, League One and League Two taking place on Saturday, this will be the focus of our attention.
Here at betting.bet we have compiled a list of some of our leading fancies in the EFL on Saturday afternoon, providing the latest pre-match odds from our partners at Unibet.
EFL Acca Odds - 40/1
- Burnley to win (22/25)
- Stoke City to win (59/50)
- Huddersfield Town to win (7/5)
- Birmingham City to win (2/5)
- Newport County to win (21/10)
Burnley v Blackburn Rovers
BURNLEY to win - 22/25
Bonus Bet: Over 2.5 Match Goals - 4/5
Arguably the biggest match in the English Football League at the weekend is at Turf Moor where Burnley host their East Lancashire rivals Blackburn Rovers in one of the day’s 12:30 kick-offs. Both sides have kicked off their respective campaigns in solid fashion and head into the weekend occupying two of the division’s top five places. Blackburn Rovers are unbeaten in three matches, taking seven points from a possible nine but did suffer a shock 2-1 loss at home to Blackpool.
Burnley’s perfect start to the season ended with a whimper last weekend as they went down 1-0 away at Sunderland having won their first two matches convincingly. The Clarets remain the bookies’ favourite to win the title and they cannot afford to record a second successive loss this early in the season. Home advantage could prove crucial here and we’re siding with Scott Parker’s side in the East Lancs Derby.
Burnley and Blackburn Rovers are currently the two highest-scoring sides in the division so we’re hoping for real fireworks on Saturday. You should consider backing over 2.5 match goals at a very generous 4/5.
Plymouth Argyle v Stoke City
STOKE CITY to win - 59/50
Bonus Bet: Lewis Koumas To Score At Any Time - 9/4
Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle tenure got off to the worst possible start as they were on the receiving end of a convincing 4-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on the opening weekend of the season. The Pilgrims have since become far more hard to beat, earning deserved draws against both Hull City and QPR however their wait for a first win of the season may go on a little longer as Stoke City make the long trip south on Saturday.
Stoke City have lost successive league games to Watford and West Bromwich Albion but their opening weekend win over much-fancied Coventry City coupled with their 5-0 demolition of Middlesbrough in the League Cup second round highlights just why the Potters cannot be taken lightly this season. Current Stoke City boss Steven Schumacher spent two successful years at Home Park before leaving Plymouth Argyle to take the Stoke City job last December.
On-loan Liverpool teenager Lewis Koumas has scored two in four since arriving at Stoke City in the summer and the Welsh international is worth real consideration at 9/4 to score at any time on Saturday.
Rotherham United v Huddersfield Town
HUDDERSFIELD TOWN to win - 7/5
Bonus Bet: Huddersfield Town To Win To Nil - 29/10
There are three sides boasting a 100% record after three rounds of League One fixtures and all three (Stockport County, Huddersfield Town and Charlton Athletic) play away from home this coming weekend. Huddersfield Town look most likely to make it four wins from four as they travel to struggling Rotherham United in one of two matches in the division kicking off at 12:30 on Saturday.
Rotherham United’s solitary point from their opening three matches came in a tame 0-0 draw at home to Bristol Rovers and they should be no match for one of the early favourites for promotion this weekend.
Rotherham United are yet to score a single league goal this season whilst Huddersfield Town have conceded just once in three League One matches. Huddersfield Town have kept three straight clean sheets against Rotherham United including both home and away in the Championship last season. Huddersfield Town to win to nil is a solid bet at 29/10.
Birmingham City v Wigan Athletic
BIRMINGHAM CITY to win - 2/5
Bonus Bet: Alfie May To Score At Any Time - 27/20
Birmingham City are the red-hot favourites to win League One this season after a summer where they almost outspent the other 23 League One clubs combined. The Blues started their campaign with a stuttering 1-1 draw at home to Reading but have since bounced back to win away at both Wycombe Wanderers and Leyton Orient. Birmingham City return to St Andrews this weekend as they host a Wigan Athletic side languishing in 18th position after three league games.
Wigan Athletic lost successive matches against Charlton Athletic and Reading before getting off the mark last weekend with a 1-0 win at home to Crawley Town. However, Crawley Town are amongst the bookies’ favourites for relegation so you shouldn’t place too much significance on that win for The Latics.
Alfie May finished last season as the League One Player of the Year and Golden Boot winner having netted 23 times in 43 matches for Charlton Athletic. Following a summer switch to Birmingham City, the 31-year-old has picked up where he left off by netting three goals in three League One games for his new club this season. May is priced at 27/20 to score at any time on Saturday.
Morecambe v Newport County
NEWPORT COUNTY to win - 21/10
Bonus Bet: Under 2.5 Match Goals - 10/11
Newport County bounced back from their last-gasp opening day defeat to Cheltenham Town in real style as they recorded back-to-back League Two wins against much-fancied Doncaster Rovers and Accrington Stanley. Next up for Nelson Jardim’s side is a trip to struggling Morecambe and The Exiles could find themselves in the top three come Sunday.
Morecambe are set for a tough season and three successive 1-0 defeats leave them as the only side in the division yet to register a single point. Only four shots on target in three league games so far highlight just where it’s going wrong for The Shrimps. We’re not expecting too many goals in Lancashire this Saturday.
