Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe: Race Preview, Tips & Odds
Here at betting.bet we’ll preview the ‘Arc’, providing exclusive betting tips and race insights as well as the latest race odds
The eyes of the horse racing world will be on Longchamp this weekend as we look forward to the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. This iconic Group 1 race is amongst the most prestigious races in the world and this year’s renewal looks wide-open. Here at betting.bet we’ll preview the ‘Arc’, providing exclusive betting tips and race insights as well as the latest race odds from our partners at BoyleSports.
Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Overview
Contested over an official distance of 2,400 metres (approximately 1m4f), the Arc is open to horses aged three years and above, excluding geldings. Andre Fabre has trained a record eight Arc winners, most recently Waldgeist in 2019 whilst Frankie Dettori is the race’s most successful jockey with six race wins. Dettori’s last success came on board Enable in 2018 and in doing so, Enable became just the eighth horse to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe twice. A €5,000,000 purse makes the Arc one of the richest horse races in the world.
Ace Impact won the race twelve months ago to give trainer Jean-Claude Rouget and jockey Cristian Demuro their second race win in four years.
The Market Leaders
There are a couple of leading French horses at the head of the market with both Sosie and Look De Vega well-supported in the betting. Sosie has been backed into favourite for trainer Andre Fabre after landing the Prix Niel over 1m4f and Longchamp last month. The market leader also won the Grand Prix de Paris over the same track and trip in July and is a worthy race favourite. Sosie’s only defeat in four runs this year came when outpaced over a shorter distance at Chantilly in the Prix du Jockey Club back in June. Certainly needs 1m4f and is the one to beat on Sunday.
Look De Vega won that Prix du Jockey Club renewal back in June but has eased in the betting slightly since failing to justify favouritism in the Prix Niel here last month. The previously-unbeaten three-year-old failed to see out the longer trip to come home third behind Sosie and Delius.
Japan’s Leading Hope
There has never been a Japanese-trained winner of the Arc but Shin Emperor is certainly capable of ending the country’s long wait for a win in the race. The three-year-old is the brother of 2020 winner Scottass and warmed up for the race by coming home a close third in the Irish Champion Stakes over 1m2f at Leopardstown last month.
Ahead of Sunday’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Shin Emperor’s trainer Yoshito Yahagi explained, “For the Japanese, this is a very important race, a more and more important race. For 50 years I have been dreaming about this race, it’s been my goal to come here and I’m very emotional that I am now in France and having a runner in this race.”
The Irish Contingent
Ireland has an excellent Arc record but has not produced a race winner since Found won in 2016. This year Ireland is well-represented with Aidan O’Brien pair Los Angeles and Continuous set to be joined by Al Riffa for son Joseph O’Brien. Los Angeles is the most likely Irish-trained winner as he heads across the Channel in decent form having won both the Irish Derby and Great Voltigeur Stakes over 1m4f. Not quite as effective over the shorter trip in the Irish Champion Stakes but has to be respected over what looks an ideal trip for the talented Ballydoyle entry.
The Best Of British
Bluestocking looks to be the best of the British contingent having been supplemented for Sunday’s Arc at a cost of £100,000. Nine of the last sixteen Arc winners have been fillies and Bluestocking could see trainer Ralph Beckett improve on last year’s second place finish.
Four-year-old Bluestocking warmed up for the Arc by landing the Group 1 Prix Vermeille over 1m4f at Longchamp last month and bagged further Group glory this year when winning both the Middleton Fillies’ and Pretty Polly Stakes.
