Crawley Town v Shrewsbury Town
Crawley Town to win - 11/10
Crawley Town can count themselves unfortunate to have been handed such a tricky run of fixtures on the return to League One. Four of the last six five league games played by last season’s League Two play-off winners have come against sides currently sat in the top six in League One. Despite a nightmare run of fixtures, Crawley Town’s undoing this season has been their inability to convert chances into goals. Their xG (expected goals) scored after nine matches is 1.12 goals per game whilst in reality they have averaged just 0.56 goals per game. In contrast their xGA (expected goals against) is a modest 1.27 yet they have conceded 1.44 goals per game.
If there was ever a game to produce an upturn in form it is a home tie against a Shrewsbury Town side with just one point from a possible 15 on the road this season. Shrewsbury Town may only be a couple of points behind Crawley Town ahead of Saturday’s trip to the Broadfield Stadium but they have taken just two points from their last six league games and seem to be on a downward trajectory. Paul Hurst has overseen just five wins in 32 matches since returning to Shrewsbury Town and we’re not expecting them to get too much from their trip to West Sussex on Saturday.
AFC Wimbledon v Carlisle United
AFC Wimbledon to win - 3/4
AFC Wimbledon standing in the bottom half of the League Two table is probably a false position given that they have three games in hand over the majority of sides in the league. Recent flooding at Plough Lane means AFC Wimbledon have not played a home league game since earning a deserved 3-0 win over rivals MK Dons. They do however head into the weekend with a 100% home league record this season. The Dons also defeated Premier League side Ipswich Town in round two of the League Cup to extend their unbeaten home record to eight matches in all competitions.
Carlisle United are Saturday’s visitors to Plough Lane and do so on the back of just two wins in sixteen matches in all competitions. Only Newport County have conceded more goals than Carlisle United in League Two this season whilst three games without a goal in all competitions is a real cause for concern for Mike Williamson’s side.
Barrow v Morecambe
Barrow to win - 4/7
After last season’s end-of-season collapse, Barrow fans will be relieved to see their team bounce back to winning ways last weekend after successive league defeats against promotion rivals Gillingham and Doncaster Rovers. Barrow had to come from behind to claim a deserved 2-1 win at home to Cheltenham Town last weekend and should prove too strong for one of the division’s other strugglers on Saturday afternoon.
Barrow have earned more points (13) at home than any other side in League Two this season with four wins and one draw from five home league games so far. In contrast, Saturday’s opponents, local rivals Morecambe have taken just a single point from their five away league games and sit rock-bottom of the EFL, winless and with just four points from their first ten matches.
