Chelsea have slipped slightly off the pace in the Premier League, taking just one point from their last two league games. The Blues were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Nottingham Forest before the international break and lost 2-1 to Liverpool in an entertaining contest at Anfield last weekend. Enzo Maresca’s side currently sit in sixth position with 14 points from their first eight matches in the Premier League. Chelsea are unbeaten in six matches at Stamford Bridge in all competitions.

Newcastle United have also endured a tough time in the league recently and head to London winless in four league games. Eddie Howe’s side lost 1-0 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend whilst their last away league game was a 0-0 draw against Everton at Goodison Park. Ahead of this weekend’s Premier League fixtures, Newcastle United sit ninth on 12 points.

Team News

Chelsea have no fresh injury concerns ahead of the weekend and given that Reece James did not travel to Greece for Thursday’s 4-1 UEFA Conference League win over Panathinaikos, the Chelsea captain could be in line to start a second successive league game. Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella should return after serving a one-game suspension for the Liverpool defeat.

Newcastle United remain without the likes of Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Sven Botman but Eddie Howe’s side have no fresh injury concerns and could field the same XI that started the loss at home to Brighton last weekend.

Chelsea v Newcastle United: Head-to-Head

Chelsea ended a run of three straight league games without a win against Newcastle United in the corresponding fixture last season, winning 3-2 at Stamford Bridge in March. Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk were the Chelsea goal scorers whilst Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy were on target for Newcastle United.

Newcastle United’s record at Stamford Bridge is poor, failing to win away at Chelsea in any competition since May 2012. Their subsequent twelve matches away at Chelsea have produced two draws and ten Chelsea wins.

Betting Tips

Both teams have scored in Chelsea’s last five matches in all competitions whilst there have been over 2.5 match goals scored in six of the last seven. Despite Newcastle United’s last two league games providing a combined total of one goal, these markets are of real interest this weekend. Both teams to score is priced at 1/2 whilst over 2.5 match goals is available at 4/9.

Cole Palmer has not scored since bagging four first-half goals in Chelsea’s win against Brighton last month but the England international has to be considered on Sunday. Palmer is 11/10 to score at any time or 4/1 to score first. 

At the other end of the pitch, Alexander Isak netted home and away for Newcastle United against Chelsea last season but he has not scored since getting the winner at home to Spurs on September 1st. Isak will prove popular in the goalscorer markets but from a Newcastle United perspective, our preference is for Anthony Gordon. Buoyed by a recent contract extension, Gordon has scored in two of Newcastle United’s last three league games against Chelsea and is 3/1 to score at any time.

The four players with the most yellow cards in the Premier League this season could all feature at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Fofana and Cucurella have amassed five yellow cards apiece for Chelsea whilst Newcastle United pair Joelinton and Dan Burn are both one booking away from suspension on four yellow cards. Over 5.5 cards seems a certainty at 5/6 whilst in the player cards markets, below are a few players worth consideration.
