Erik ten Hag Sacked: Next Manchester United Manager Odds
Here at betting.bet we’ll assess the prospects of some of the early market leaders
After a disastrous start to the 2024/25 season, Manchester United have made the decision to sack manager Erik ten Hag. Whilst the move did not come as too much of a shock following a run of just one win in eight matches in all competition, speculation over his successor at Old Trafford has intensified. Here at betting.bet we’ll assess the prospects of some of the early market leaders with odds courtesy of our betting partners at bet365.
Xavi Hernandez - 2/1
Bet365 have installed Barcelona and Spain legend Xavi Hernandez as the early favourite in the race to succeed ten Hag. Xavi has been out of work since leaving Barcelona in the summer and is thought to have plenty of admirers at Old Trafford. Xavi won La Liga in his first full season as Barcelona manager but left in the summer after being forced to watch rivals Real Madrid win a La Liga / Champions League double.
Ruud van Nistelrooy - 5/2
Ruud van Nistelrooy has been placed in temporary charge and there is a feeling that he was being lined up as a ten Hag replacement when he arrived at Manchester United during the summer. Van Nistelrooy’s only season in senior management saw him steer PSV Eindhoven to a second place Eredivisie finish in the 2022/23. PSV were the league’s highest scorers with 89 goals in their 34 matches but their record of 40 goals against was the worst of any side in the league’s top six. Ironically, Feyenoord were the Eredivisie champions that season, managed by a certain Arne Slot.
Gareth Southgate - 5/1
Gareth Southgate has long been tipped as a future Manchester United manager but his appointment is unlikely to prove popular amongst the club’s fans. Southgate enjoyed a successful stint in charge of the England national team however he failed to deliver any silverware - becoming the first manager to lose back-to-back European Championship finals. Southgate’s only previous club management position saw him possess a win percentage of less than 30% during a three-year stint at Middlesbrough. Southgate has now been out of club management for 15 years.
Julian Nagelsmann - 5/1
Julian Nagelsmann is an intriguing name to feature so high up the list given that he is the current German national team manager. Bayern Munich once paid €25 million to prise Nagelsmann away from RB Leipzig and he went on to win the Bundesliga title in his only full season at the German giants. Nagelsmann left Bayern Munich in March 2023 with the fourth highest Bundesliga points average in the club’s history. Nagelsmann stock continues to rise after steering Germany to the semi-finals of Euro 2024.
Ruben Amorim - 10/1
Ruben Amorim is believed to be reluctant to leave Sporting Lisbon mid-season whilst the Portuguese club would also command a fee in the region of €20 million if he was to leave for a foreign club. However, Amorim is considered one of the best young managers in the game and has spent four and a half hugely successful years at Sporting. Under Amorim, Sporting Lisbon have won two Primeira Liga titles in four full seasons whilst this season they sit top of the table with nine wins from a possible nine and also remain unbeaten in the UEFA Champions League. Amorim looks to be the outstanding candidate, however with this season looking a write-off for Manchester United, they may be tempted to wait until the summer before trying to tempt the Portuguese to switch Lisbon for Manchester.
Thomas Frank - 10/1
Thomas Frank is the only current Premier League manager shortlisted for the Manchester United hotseat. Frank has been in charge at Brentford since 2018, taking them from the Championship to become an established Premier League side. His Premier League experience is a major positive but could the step up from Brentford to Manchester United prove too big a risk?
