Aberdeen have made a sensational start to the new season and sit second to Celtic on goal difference only. Under new boss Jimmy Thelin, The Dons have won eight and drawn one of their nine league games so far. Their only dropped points came in a 2-2 draw away at Celtic earlier this month.

Rangers head into this week’s fixtures six points adrift of Celtic and Aberdeen with 19 points in nine matches. Rangers’ two league defeats this season have both come away from home, losing at Old Firm rivals Celtic (3-0) as well as last weekend’s shock 1-0 defeat at Kilmarnock. Rangers have bounced back from that reversal at Kilmarnock to claim back-to-back wins over FCSB in the Europa League (4-0) and St Mirren in the Premiership (2-1).

Team News

Aberdeen have no fresh injury concerns ahead of Wednesday with Dante Polvara and top scorer Pape Habib Gueye still sidelined through injury. Peter Ambrose is pushing for a starting berth having stepped up the bench to grab the winner at home to Dundee United last time out.

Rangers should be unchanged from the win over St Mirren with a number of first-teamers still missing through injury. Philippe Clement will once again be unable to call upon the likes of Rabbi Motondo, Danilo, Ridvan Yilmaz and Oscar Cortez.

Aberdeen v Rangers: Head-to-Head

Rangers won 2-1 when these sides last met at Ibrox back in February however their most recent clash at Pittodrie ended in a 1-1 draw. Aberdeen looked to have clinched all three points in last season’s corresponding fixture but James Tavernier rescued a point for Rangers with a 94th minute penalty.

Betting Tips

Aberdeen have to be respected given their superb start to the season but Jimmy Thelin’s side may have one eye on Saturday’s huge League Cup semi-final against Celtic at Hampden Park. Rangers take on Motherwell in the other semi-final on Sunday but that extra day’s rest and a fixture which is on paper an easier fixture arguably takes the pressure off ahead of Wednesday’s Premiership fixture. An away win looks far too big to ignore at 20/21.

Prior to last Saturday’s 1-0 win at home to Dundee United, both teams had scored in four straight league games involving Aberdeen whilst The Dons have netted in 21 consecutive matches in all competitions. There will be chances at Pittodrie on Wednesday and both over 2.5 match goals and both teams to score look real value at 4/6 or 4/7 respectively.

Vaclav Cerny has scored five goals in Rangers’ last four matches in all competitions and will hope to carry that excellent run of form into Wednesday. The Czech Republic international is priced at 15/2 to score first or 3/1 to score at any time against Aberdeen.

In the absence of the Premiership’s top goalscorer Pape Habib Gueye, Aberdeen will hope to see young Finland international Topi Keskinen continue his fine start to his career in Scotland. The 21-year-old has scored twice in Aberdeen’s last four league games and is available at 9/2 to score at any time at home to Rangers on Wednesday.

Aberdeen and Rangers have racked up a combined 45 yellow cards in their first nine league games this season and given the magnitude of this week’s fixture, we could see a high number of bookings dished out at Pittodrie. Over 5.5 cards is reasonably priced at 23/20.

Nicolas Raskin has already picked up more bookings (3) in six games this season than he managed in the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign. The Belgian is 3/1 to be carded against Aberdeen. Raskin will go up against Aberdeen’s summer recruit Ante Palaversa on Wednesday and the 24-year-old has also started the season with three yellow cards in six league games. Palaversa is 11/4 to pick up another card when Rangers visit Aberdeen on Wednesday.
