Greece and England go head-to-head in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday in what could prove to be a promotion decider in Group B2. The two nations are all-but-guaranteed to claim the top two spots in the group but are set to battle it out for top spot in Athens this week. As we look ahead to this key fixture, here at betting.bet we’ll provide the latest team news, exclusive betting tips and enhanced match insights as well as the latest pre-match odds from our betting partners at Ladbrokes.

England Team News

England have been rocked by a series of squad withdrawals ahead of this must-win fixture in Athens. Caretaker manager Lee Carsley must do without the likes of Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cole Palmer, Jack Grealish, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Jarrad Branthwaite, Aaron Ramsdale and Levi Colwill. There could be a first cap handed to Curtis Jones, Lewis Hall and Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

Form

Greece sit top of Group B2 with four wins from a possible four, including a first ever win at Wembley Stadium. Thursday’s hosts have won five of their seven internationals in 2024 with a 1-0 friendly defeat against Germany their only loss of the year. Greece’s recent home record is excellent, losing just one competitive fixture at home in more than three years.

England bounced back from their shock defeat at home to Greece by winning 3-1 away at Finland last time out. Emphasising their consistency over the past few years, the Three Lions’ only other defeat in their last 19 competitive internationals came in the Euro 2024 final.

Greece v England: Head-to-Head

Prior to last month’s 2-1 win for Greece at Wembley, England had a superb record against Thursday’s opponents, winning seven and drawing two of their previous nine internationals.

Betting Tips

There are many factors tipping Thursday’s tie in Greece’s favour; their impressive home record, last month’s Wembley win and numerous withdrawals from the England squad. However, we are actually tipping England to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive with three points at the Athens Olympic Stadium. An away win is incredible value at 21/20.

Despite nine withdrawals from the England squad, Lee Carsley still has a wealth of world class talent to call upon in the Nations League. There is of course one stand-out option in the various goalscorer markets with Harry Kane accounting for 68 of the 79 international goals scored by this current England squad. The England captain has started this season just as he ended the last, maintaining his prolific start to life at Bayern Munich. Kane has netted 17 goals in 16 matches in all competitions for Bayern Munich in 2024/25 whilst he has also netted six goals in twelve internationals this calendar year. Kane looks a sure thing at 13/8 to score at any time for England in Athens. You can boost your odds by backing England’s all-time record goalscorer to score first or to score two or more at 17/4 or 10/1 respectively.

Vangelis Pavlidis was the Greek hero at Wembley, scoring both goals for the visitors and the Benfica forward remains his nation’s main danger against on Thursday. Pavlidis has scored three league goals for Benfica in the Primeira Liga this season and he is priced at 29/10 to score at any time against England once again.

However, despite the heroics of Pavlidis at Wembley, the current Greece side are far from world beaters and we’re anticipating a moderately easy night’s work for England. England to win to nil looks way overpriced at 9/4.
