Shloer Chase (Registered As The Cheltenham Chase) (Grade 2) (GBB Race)
JONBON - 2/5
There are only four runners confirmed for the first Grade-level race of the weekend and Jonbon is the red-hot favourite to land the Grade 2 Shloer Chase. Contested over two miles on Cheltenham’s Old Course, the Shloer Chase is open to horses aged five years and over, the bookies’ latest odds suggest that this year’s renewal could be a showdown between last year’s first two home. Jonbon won the race twelve months ago, putting in a dominant display to finish 9½ lengths clear of Edwardstone and there is nothing to suggest those placings will be reversed this time around. The old adversaries also went on to meet in both the Tingle Creek and Celebration Chase at Sandown and it was Jonbon that emerged victorious on both occasions. The Nicky Henderson-trained Jonbon has never finished outside of the top two, boasting career figures of 11/11121/111211/11211- whilst Edwardstone is now ten years old and has won just one of the last nine races.

Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
TOMMIE BEAU - 6/1
The Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase promises to be one of the most exciting races of the day with nine runners confirmed to tackle 31 fences over a gruelling 3m5f trip. The leading British hope is the Nicky Henderson-trained Mister Coffey with the nine-year-old vying for favouritism with Conflated for Gordon Elliott. Conflated is undoubtedly a talented horse having placed in two Grade 1 races in the spring but he will have to put in the performance of a lifetime to defy top weight on Friday. 7lb claimer Mr R James is on board Conflated but he’s still giving away a massive 19lbs to Mister Coffey.
Mister Coffey showed bucket loads of stamina when eighth in the 2023 Grand National and was third off the same weight in a Grade 2 contest at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival but he has not been seen since February and historically needs a run or two before he really gets going for the season.
If we are to oppose the leading two in the market then Tommie Beau could be the pick of the bunch for trainer Seamus Mullins. The nine-year-old has been busy this year but remains as consistent as ever. Tommie Beau boasts figures of 112123 this year, including a hat-trick of wins over 3m1½f at Cartmel. Stepped up to Friday’s trip when third in last month’s Durham National off a similar weight. Concedes 3lbs in the weights to Mister Coffey at Cheltenham but we’re siding with the Irish in this.
3:30
Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle (Grade 2) (Registered As The Hyde Novices' Hurdle) (GBB Race)
VALGRAND - 6/4
There is an odds-on favourite in the second Grade 2 renewal of the day but one we’re going to oppose in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle. Potters Charm won 3/3 in 2024, culminating in a novice hurdle win over 2m4f at Cheltenham last month and he heads back to the course, stepping up just one furlong for trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies. He commands respect after that dominant performance last month but our preference on Friday is for another leading player chasing a four-timer. Valgrand put in a supreme performance to win the Grade 2 Sky Bet Novices’ Hurdle over 2m1/2f. Stepping up in trip on his return to Cheltenham but the manner of his 17 length win over a talented field last month eases any concerns over this. Trained by the in-form Skelton yard, Valgrand has already won a novice hurdle over 2m3½f at Bangor-on-Dee and we’re fully expecting him to step up once more in style on Friday.
