Form
Poland endured a bad day at the office on Friday evening as they were soundly beaten 5-1 away at Portugal. Poland are now winless in four internationals and have won just one of their last eight matches. Their 5-1 drubbing in Porto means Poland now have the worst goal difference and have conceded the most goals in Group A1.
Scotland have given themselves a fighting chance of avoiding relegation from League A thanks to a deserved 1-0 win at home to Croatia on Friday evening. Scotland’s victory at Hampden Park was their first international win in nine attempts and their first at home since June 2023.
Group A1 Roundup
Portugal's emphatic win away at Poland on Friday means they have topped the group with 13 points from their five matches so far.Last month’s 0-0 away at Scotland is the only game Cristiano Ronaldo and co have failed to win in the current Nations League campaign. Croatia are now winless in their last two matches but have booked a place in the tournament’s quarter-finals with seven points in five matches.
Poland and Sctoland are level on four points and head into Monday knowing the losers will drop down to League B whilst the nation that clinches third place in the group will face a relegation play-off next March. If the sides finish level, Poland’s superior head-to-head record will see them pip Scotland to third place.
Poland v Scotland: Head-to-Head
Poland won 3-2 in the reverse fixture at Hampden Park thanks to a last-gasp winner from Nicola Zalewski. The visitors had raced into a two-goal half-time lead through Sebastian Szymanski and Robert Lewandowski before goals from Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay levelled the match at 2-2. Zalewski’s winner was scored in the 97th minute from the penalty spot.
Poland are unbeaten in five previous competitive internationals against Scotland whilst overall they have four wins compared to just two wins for Scotland with four draws. Five of the last seven internationals contested by Poland and Scotland have ended all-square.
Betting Tips
Scotland have scored no more than one goal in seven of their last eight internationals, registering just five goals in their five Nations League games so far. The one exception during that run was the reverse fixture against Poland where they scored twice in a 3-2 defeat. Poland’s defence is a real concern with eleven goals conceded in their last three matches. Monday’s hosts have conceded 14 goals in their five group games so far and we’re expecting to see a high number of goals in Warsaw on Monday. Both teams to score and over 2.5 match goals look equally attractive options at 4/6 or 17/20 respectively.
Robert Lewandowski will inevitably prove the most popular selection in the various goalscorer markets and he is a market leader that simply cannot be ignored. Poland’s captain and all-time record goalscorer scored in the reverse fixture in September and has been in red-hot form for Barcelona throughout the first few months of the new season. Lewandowki has scored 19 goals in 17 matches for Barcelona this season and is expected to add to his 84 international goals at home to Scotland. Lewandowski is priced at 9/5 to score at any time or 21/4 to score first.
No nation has received fewer yellow cards than Scotland’s tally of six in the current Nations League campaign whilst Poland’s eleven bookings in five matches ensures they are also amongst the better-behaved teams in the competition. Despite the importance of Monday’s fixture, under 4.5 cards could prove hugely overpriced at 11/10.
