The Bookies’ Favourite

Two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka is aiming to become the first female to win three consecutive Australian Open singles titles since Martina Hingis claimed a hat-trick of wins between 1997 and 1999. World number one, Sabalenka ended 2024 by landing a third Grand Slam title with success at the US Open.

The 26-year-old kicked off 2025 in a similarly successful fashion as she won the Brisbane International. Sabalenka lost in last year's Brisbane final to Elena Rybakina but fought back from a set down in this year’s final to defeat Russian qualifier Polina Kudermetova (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) in the final.

Major Players

Iga Swiatek suffered a shock third round exit at last year’s Australian Open but the five-time Grand Slam winner has to be respected. Whilst the clay at Roland Garros is an obvious favourite for Swiatek, the world number two is more than capable of success on Melbourne’s hard courts. The 23-year-old won both the 2022 US Open and 2023 WTA Finals on hard courts but has only progressed beyond round four of the Australian Open once.

22-year-old Zheng Qinwen was a surprise finalist in Melbourne last year but seemed to go from strength-to-strength in 2024 in returns Down Under with a real chance of going one better. Qinwen won gold at the Olympic Games in Paris before losing out on a tiebreaker in the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia in November.

The WTA Finals were won by world number three Coco Gauff and the American has certainly shown signs of rediscovering the form that saw her win the 2023 US Open as a teenager. Gauff was a losing semi-finalist at last year’s Australian Open but defeated both Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek on her way to victory at the WTA Finals. Gauff has returned this year in superb form, winning five of her singles matches and both of her doubles matches, without losing a set as the United States claimed the United Cup title.
