Where To Watch Burnley v Sunderland
Burnley versus Sunderland will be played at Turf Moor on Friday 17th January. This huge Sky Bet Championship fixture is set to kick off at 8pm with live televised coverage available in the UK on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football. Live radio coverage is also available on TalkSPORT 2.
Form
Burnley have closed to within one point of league leaders Leeds United in the Championship thanks to a return of 52 points in 26 matches. Scott Parker’s side boast division’s meanest defence with just nine goals conceded so far this season. The Clarets needed extra-time to get past Reading in last weekend’s FA Cup third round tie but they are now unbeaten in 14 matches in all competitions.
Sunderland are two points and two positions behind Burnley in fourth place in the Championship with 50 points from 26 matches. The Black Cats took just one point from two matches between Christmas and new year but have since bounced back to win two straight league games in 2025. Sunderland were also taken to extra-time in the FA Cup last weekend but lost 2-1 to Stoke City at the Stadium of Light.
Burnley v Sunderland: Head-to-Head
Burnley’s stints in the top-flight means there haven’t been too many recent meetings between these sides. Sunderland’s only league visit to Turf Moor in the past eight years was a goalless draw in March 2023. The reverse fixture in the North East earlier this season ended in a 1-0 win for Sunderland back in August.
Betting.Bet Betting Tips
Burnley’s incredible defensive record is a major contributing factor of this season’s promotion push. Only three of The Clarets’ last 24 league games have produced over 2.5 match goals making this an obvious place to start if looking to place a bet on Friday’s Championship fixture. At Unibet, under 2.5 match goals is available at odds of 1/2.
Sunderland remain very much in the title race in the Championship but their recent away record has not been great. Regis Le Bris’ side have won just one of their last seven away league games. This sort of form does not bode well ahead of a trip to a Burnley side that remains unbeaten at home in the league this season. The draw should not be disregarded but we are giving the hosts the edge; a home win is our pick at 23/20.
As we are anticipating a low-scoring Burnley win, there are only two possible correct scores covered by both of the betting tips recommended above. A 1-0 Burnley win is priced at 5/1 whilst Burnley to win 2-0 is available at 17/2.
Josh Brownhill is Burnley’s top goalscorer this season with nine Championship goals to his name. The 29-year-old has more than doubled the number of league goals scored by Burnley’s second highest scorer and despite failing to score since Boxing Day he has to be considered in the various goalscorer markets on Friday. Brownhill is priced generously at 10/3 to score at any time. However, with minimal goals anticipated on Friday evening, there is better value in backing Brownhill to score first at 15/2
