Ascot Chase Overview
The Grade 1 Ascot Chase is contested over 17 obstacles and a distance of 2m5f. Open to horses aged five years and over, the Ascot Chase was first run in 1995 and won by future Queen Mother Champion Chase winner, Martha’s Son.
Trainer Paul Nicholls claimed a record-breaking fifth Ascot Chase win twelve months ago as Harry Cobden saddled Pic D’Orhy to glory ahead of 5/4 favourite L’Homme Presse. Previous Ascot Chase winners for Paul Nicholls include Rockforce (2000), Kauto Star (2008), Silviniaco Conti (2016) and Cyrname (2019).
The Market Leader
Pic D’Orhy returned from a 225-day break to land the Grade 2 CopyBet 1965 Chase over C&D in November and he heads back to Ascot as the red-hot favourite to become just the fifth two-time Ascot Chase winner. Having saddled Cyrname to victory in 2019 as well as riding Pic D’Orhy last year, jockey Harry Cobden is also eyeing a record-equalling third Ascot Chase win on Saturday.
Ascot Chase: Major Players
L’Homme Presse was a beaten favourite in last year's renewal of the race and he will again line up at Ascot on Saturday for trainer Venetia Williams. All three runs for L’Homme Presse since last year’s renewal have come over at least three miles. L’Homme Presse was well-beaten in both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and King George VI Chase but he steps back down in trip just three weeks on from an excellent win over 3m1f at Cheltenham in the Cotswold Chase.
Corbetts Cross looks the best Irish entry and like L’Homme Presse he is due to step back in trip for Saturday’s Ascot Chase. The eight-year-old was a Cheltenham Festival winner over 3m6f last year but was outpaced in the 3m King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, finishing 21 lengths off the race winner and almost nine lengths off Ascot Chase rival L’Homme Presse. Stepping back even further on Saturday could be risky.
