Barcelona impressed in the league stage of the Champions League, winning six of their eight matches to finish second behind Liverpool, having bypassed the play-offs, Barcelona met Benfica in the last-16. Barcelona won home and away against Benfica to earn a 4-1 aggregate win.
Borussia Dortmund finished tenth in the league phase of the Champions League to set up a play-off match against Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon. The Germans progressed 3-0 on aggregate before edging to a 3-2 aggregate win over Lille in the last-16. In both rounds, Borussia Dortmund failed to win their home legs but have progressed to the quarter-final thanks to successive away wins in the Champions League knockout stage.

Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund have met on five previous occasions and Barcelona have never lost to their German counterparts. The two sides met in the group phase of this season’s Champions League and despite Borussia Dortmund holding home advantage, Barcelona edged the time in an entertaining 3-2 win.
