Where To Watch Lyon v Manchester United
Lyon v Manchester United will be played at the Groupama Stadium at 20:00 on Thursday 10th April. The Europa League quarter-final first leg tie will be televised exclusively in the UK on TNT Sports 1 with live radio commentary available on TalkSPORT.
Domestic Form
Lyon remain in the hunt for a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League having moved up to fifth in the Ligue 1 table with a 2-1 win at home to Lille last weekend. Thursday’s hosts have earned 48 points from their 28 matches and head into this Europa League tie on the back of four straight home wins in all competitions.
Manchester United are in the midst of their worst domestic campaign of the Premier League era. The Red Devils are currently languishing in 13th in the Premier League table with a return of just 38 points from 31 matches so far. Ruben Amorim’s side drew 0-0 at home to rivals Manchester City last weekend whilst away from home they have won just one of their last five in all competitions. With just 37 goals scored in 31 league games, it’s easy to see where Manchester United’s problems lie this season.
Road To The Quarter-Final
Lyon reached the knockout phase of the Europa League by finishing sixth in the league stage of the competition. The French side lost just one of their eight games but were held to a draw on three further occasions. Whilst looking relatively comfortable at one stage, Lyon limped over the line with back-to-back draws against Fenerbahce and Ludogorets. In the last-16, Lyon defeated Romanian side FCSB home and away to secure a 7-1 aggregate win.
Manchester United were the only side to remain unbeaten throughout the league stage and having drawn their first three matches they secured third spot with five straight wins. The Red Devils won 5-2 in their last-16 tie against Real Sociedad. Having drawn 1-1 away from home in the first leg, Manchester United ran out 4-1 winners at Old Trafford in the second leg.
Lyon v Manchester United: Head-to-Head
Lyon and Manchester United have met on four previous occasions and Manhester United are yet to suffer a single defeat against Thursday’s opponents. Both fixtures played at Lyon’s former Stade de Gerland home ended all-square, most recently when drawing 1-1 in a Champions League tie in 2008.
Betting.Bet Betting Tips
We’re expecting Manchester United to progress from this quarter-final tie and the Red Devils to qualify is priced generously at 8/15. As for Thursday night’s fixture, an away win is an intriguing option at 7/4 but the draw is probably the wisest pick at odds of 9/4.
Manchester United have failed to score a single goal in back-to-back matches against Nottingham Forest and Manchester City but we’re expecting an open contest at the Groupama Stadium against a Lyon side that have scored two or more goals in eleven consecutive matches in all competitions. Both teams to score and over 2.5 match goals are equally attractive options at 4/6 or 4/5 respectively.
The goalscorer markets are intriguing, especially from a Lyon perspective. Malik Fofana is Lyon’s top goalscorer in the Europa League whilst former Arsenal forward Alexandre Lacazette leads the way domestically at Lyon’s top scorer in Ligue 1. However, we’re opposing both Fofana and Lacazette and tipping Georges Mikautadze as a potential match winner.
Mikautadze emerged as one of the stars of Euro 2024 and fresh on the back of finishing as joint-top scorer at last summer’s Euros, Mikautadze has kicked on with 14 goals in 39 matches in his debut season at Lyon. Mikautadze has scored four goals in Lyon’s last four games in all competitions and is priced at 15/8 to score any time on Thursday or 5/1 to score first.
At the other end of the pitch, Rasmus Hojlund has saved his best form for the Europa League, netting six times already in the competitions for Manchester United. However, Bruno Fernandes remains the most reliable source of goals for the Red Devils. Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is 6/5 to score or assist on Thursday.
