New Jersey Gamblers Ditch Land-based Casinos in Favor of Online Betting

In 2023, the gross operating profit for casino licensees in Garden State decreased by 4.1%, falling to $780.7 million.

The US Division for Gaming Enforcement has released its latest gambling industry figures. A major finding was that New Jersey's Atlantic City casinos are proving less profitable as New Jersey's residents take their sports betting and casino business online.

In the calendar year, the gross operating profit for casino licensees in Garden State decreased by 4.1%, falling to $780.7 million. Meanwhile, net revenue for the year experienced a very slight rise of 0.8%, reaching $3.3 billion.

The State of iGaming

This is a stark contrast to the state's igaming industry, which is enjoying an extended incline in revenue and profitability. Igaming revenue in the state reached $1.92 billion for the year, marking a 15.7% increase compared to the $1.66 billion recorded in the previous year.

These annual figures paint a clear picture of the burgeoning online betting landscape in New Jersey. This trajectory is unlikely to wane anytime soon. In fact, in April, New Jersey's online gambling revenue hit $187.9m, a boost of 18.2% year-on-year. That put online gambling only $28.9m behind the well-established land-based segment in April.
