Not every bookmaker lets you bet on racing the same way. Some offer a Union Jack, a Placepot7 and daily jockey specials; others stop at a win, an each way bet and an accumulator.
To find out which sites give racing punters the most options, we're checking 65 horse racing betting markets across the UK's main bookmakers, and the results feed into our best horse racing betting sites rankings. This guide explains every market on our list and exactly how we're testing them. The full results go live on Wednesday 28 October 2026.
How we test
We check every market live on each bookmaker's site, in October 2026, without placing any bets.
- Bet slip: we add 2 to 9 selections from different races and record every multiple offered at each size, plus the each way option.
- Racecards: we open UK races and note every market tab, from Place Only and Betting Without to match bets and favourite rows.
- Forecasts: we build forecasts and tricasts in one race, then across two and three races to test forecast doubles and trebles.
- Tote and specials: we check which Tote pools are listed and what the racing specials section holds.
- Rules check: where a site hides a market or blocks access, we use the bookmaker's own betting rules and say so.
A few rules keep the comparison fair:
- Yes means the market is available on UK racing. Markets that only appear on selected races are flagged.
- Variants count once. A site offering Union Jack Trebles, Trixies and Patents gets one Yes for Union Jack.
- Concessions aren't markets. Best Odds Guaranteed, extra places and price boosts are reviewed separately.
- Big-meeting markets get a recheck. Specials that only appear at festivals are checked again at the next major meeting.
The 65 markets at a glance
Our checklist splits into five groups, from everyday race bets to pool betting and specials.
| Group | Markets | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Race bets | 13 | Ways to back a horse in a single race |
| Forecasts & tricasts | 11 | Picking the finishing order, in one race or linked across races |
| Multiples | 25 | Doubles, accumulators and full cover bets like the Lucky 15 |
| Tote | 11 | Pool bets, from Tote Win to the Placepot and Scoop6 |
| Specials | 5 | Jockey, trainer, distance and favourite markets, plus Request a Bet |
Race bets (13)
These are the ways to back a horse in a single race, and they vary more between bookmakers than you'd expect.
- Win: your horse must finish first.
- Each Way: two equal bets, one to win and one to place, with the place part paid at a fraction of the odds.
- Ante-Post: betting days, weeks or months before a race, usually at bigger prices. Stakes are normally lost if your horse doesn't run.
- Lengthen Your Odds: back your horse to win by a set distance for a bigger price.
- Unnamed Favourite: back whichever horse starts favourite, or second favourite, at SP.
- Place Only: your horse just needs to finish in the places, at its own price.
- Without the Favourite: the favourite is ignored, so your horse wins the bet by finishing first or second behind it.
- Without the Two Favourites: the same idea, with both of the top two in the market removed.
- Betting Without: any named horse removed from the result, not just the favourite.
- Match Bets: pick which of two horses finishes ahead of the other.
- Money Back: your stake back, often as a free bet, if your horse finishes in a set position such as 2nd.
- Insurance: your stake back if your horse falls, unseats or is brought down.
- Horse Racing Bet Builder: combine several outcomes from one race into a single bet.
Forecasts & tricasts (11)
Forecasts and tricasts are about the finishing order. Most bookmakers offer them in a single race, but few let you link them across races.
- Straight Forecast: pick 1st and 2nd in the correct order.
- Reverse Forecast: pick 1st and 2nd in either order (two bets).
- Combination Forecast: three or more horses, any two of which finish 1st and 2nd.
- Tricast: pick 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the correct order.
- Combination Tricast: three or more horses, any three of which fill the top three in any order.
- Forecast Doubles and Trebles: straight, reverse or combination forecasts linked across two or three races (six markets in all).
Multiples (25)
Every site offers doubles and accumulators. The difference shows in the full cover and exotic bets, where some bookmakers stop at a Goliath and others go all the way to a Union Jack.
| Bet | Selections | Bets | How it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double / Treble / Accumulator | 2 / 3 / 4+ | 1 | All selections must win |

| Trixie | 3 | 4 | 3 doubles and a treble |
| Patent | 3 | 7 | A Trixie plus 3 singles |
| Yankee | 4 | 11 | Every double, treble and four-fold |
| Lucky 15 | 4 | 15 | A Yankee plus 4 singles |
| Each Way Lucky 15 | 4 | 30 | A Lucky 15 on both win and place |
| Canadian (Super Yankee) | 5 | 26 | Every double up to the five-fold |
| Lucky 31 | 5 | 31 | A Canadian plus 5 singles |
| Heinz | 6 | 57 | Every double up to the six-fold |
| Lucky 63 | 6 | 63 | A Heinz plus 6 singles |
| Super Heinz | 7 | 120 | Every double up to the seven-fold |

| Double Stakes About | 2 | 2 | As above, with double the stake rolling on |
| Round Robin | 3 | 10 | A Trixie plus 3 up-and-down pairs |
| Flag | 4 | 23 | A Yankee plus 6 up-and-down pairs |
| Super Flag | 5 | 46 | A Canadian plus 10 up-and-down pairs |
| Heinz Flag | 6 | 87 | A Heinz plus 15 up-and-down pairs |
| Alphabet | 6 | 26 | 2 Patents, a Yankee and a six-fold |
| Union Jack | 9 | 8+ | Trebles along the rows, columns and diagonals of a 3x3 grid |
Tote (11)
Tote bets go into a pool shared between the winners, rather than paying fixed odds. Plenty of big bookmakers don't offer them at all.
- Tote Win and Tote Place: pool versions of win and place bets.
- Exacta: pick 1st and 2nd in order, the pool version of a forecast.
- Trifecta: pick 1st, 2nd and 3rd in order, the pool version of a tricast.
- Swinger: pick two horses to both finish in the top three, in any order.
- Placepot: pick a placed horse in each of the first six races at a meeting.
- Placepot7: a seven-leg Placepot, often across several meetings.
- Quadpot: pick a placed horse in races three to six.
- Jackpot: pick the winner of six races at the day's nominated meeting.
- Scoop6: pick the winners of six nominated races, run on Saturdays.
- Survivor: one of the Tote's newer pools, offered by very few bookmakers.
Specials (5)
Racing specials let you bet on a whole meeting or festival rather than one race. Some bookmakers price them every day; others only at big festivals.
- Jockey and Trainer Specials: markets like top jockey at a festival, or a jockey challenge at a meeting.
- Distance Specials: the total winning distances across a meeting, or the winning distance in one race.
- Number of Winning Favourites: how many favourites win, or how well they perform across a meeting.
- SP of the Winner: the combined starting prices of the winners at a meeting.
- Request a Bet: ask the bookmaker to price up a bet of your own design.
What's next
The results go live on Wednesday 28 October 2026, with every bookmaker scored out of 65 and a full Yes/No breakdown for each.
Bookmakers in this round include Betfred, William Hill, BoyleSports, Unibet, Star Sports, JeffBet and BetVictor. Early findings show a huge gap between the big racing brands and the smaller white-label sites, which in some cases offer barely a dozen of the 65 markets.
We review every one of these bookmakers in full, and you can compare them all on our betting sites page.
