The dogs from 4ThePlayer's 5 Doggy Dollars are back, and judging by the mansion, jewellery and rather extravagant surroundings, things have gone extremely well since we last saw them. 5 Doggy Millionaires Dream Drop takes the original game's canine cast, gives them a serious lifestyle upgrade and adds Relax Gaming's Dream Drop progressive jackpot system to the mix.
The action centres around dog symbols that can carry Cash Prizes as part of the Money Ways mechanic. Unlike a conventional Cash Collect game where the values are useless until a Collector appears, Cash Prizes attached to winning symbols are awarded immediately. A Collect symbol can then scoop up those values again, creating the possibility of getting paid twice from the same set of prizes.
There's considerably more going on than just collecting cash. A random Frisbee Feature can reshuffle the reels to create or improve a win, while the Respin Bonus locks Cash Prize symbols in position and provides repeated opportunities to add more. Fill an entire reel during Respins and the frisbee returns, collecting the values, doubling them and freeing the reel to start again.
Then there's Dream Drop. Five progressive jackpots sit above proceedings and can be reached through the Fortune Spin and Fortune Wheel. This inevitably gives the game its headline attraction, although there's enough happening underneath the jackpot system that the dogs haven't become entirely dependent on their millionaire status.
Visually, the whole thing is knowingly ridiculous. These aren't dogs sitting nicely beside the fireplace. They're wealthy dogs enjoying the high life in a mansion, dressed considerably better than most of us and surrounded by cash. It's colourful, cartoonish and full of personality, although the overall presentation remains very similar to 5 Doggy Dollars.
The Money Ways mechanic allows regular dog symbols to appear carrying Cash Prize values. If those symbols form part of a winning combination, their attached cash values are awarded alongside the normal win.
That's an important difference from many Cash Collect slots. You don't necessarily need to wait for another symbol to arrive before the displayed value becomes useful.
A Collector can still turn up afterwards and award those values again, though, which means a winning Money Ways combination can potentially have another bone to chew on.
The Collect Scatter collects all visible Cash Prize values and awards their combined total. If those prizes have already formed part of a Money Ways win, they can effectively contribute for a second time.
It's a straightforward Cash Collect mechanic, but Money Ways makes it more interesting because the values aren't simply sitting dormant while you wait for the Collector.
That creates a nice relationship between normal wins and the collection mechanic rather than treating them as two completely separate parts of the game.
The Frisbee Feature can randomly activate during the base game and reshuffle the symbols to create a win or improve one already available. The resulting arrangement guarantees at least one Cash Prize.
It's one of the more playful features and fits the theme particularly well. A frisbee flies in, the dogs naturally lose all concentration and the reels get rearranged in your favour.
More importantly, it actually serves a purpose beyond providing another animation. Creating or improving a Money Ways win means the Frisbee Feature feeds directly into the game's Cash Prize mechanics.
Landing the required Respin Scatter symbols triggers the Respin Bonus, beginning with three respins. Cash Prize symbols become locked in position and every newly landed Cash Prize resets the counter to three.
The interesting part is that Money Ways remains active, so locked symbols can still form winning combinations during the feature. Collect Scatters can also appear and collect the Cash Prizes currently visible.
It's essentially a Hold and Win mechanic with more happening around the locked symbols than usual. You're not simply filling spaces and watching a respin counter.
Fill an entire reel with locked Cash Prize symbols during the Respin Bonus and the Frisbee Feature can collect all the values on that reel. Their combined value is doubled, stored above the reel and the positions are cleared so they can be used again.
This is probably the smartest feature in the game.
Filling a reel doesn't effectively kill that part of the grid. Instead, the game cashes it in, doubles the collection and gives you the space back to potentially fill again.
For once, chasing your tail might actually get you somewhere.
The Fortune Spin can randomly activate before a base game spin, replacing the normal symbols with blank positions and Dream Drop symbols. Landing at least three Dream Drop symbols provides access to the Fortune Wheel.
Landing additional Dream Drop symbols also improves the wheel. Four remove the Rapid Jackpot from consideration, while five remove the Midi as well, leaving only the larger jackpot tiers available.
That's a particularly nice touch because the trigger itself has progression. You're not merely hoping to qualify for the jackpot wheel. You're hoping to qualify with the weakest prizes already taken out of the dog bowl.
The Dream Drop system provides five progressive jackpots: Rapid, Midi, Maxi, Major and Mega. Trigger the Fortune Wheel and one of the five is awarded.
The jackpot integration is reasonably strong because there's a proper feature leading into it rather than Dream Drop simply triggering without any involvement from the player. The ability to remove smaller jackpot tiers by landing additional Dream Drop symbols makes the Fortune Spin considerably more interesting.
It's obviously the Mega that puts the millionaire into 5 Doggy Millionaires, but the route towards it is more entertaining than simply waiting for a random jackpot notification.
There's a surprising amount to follow in 5 Doggy Millionaires Dream Drop without the game becoming difficult to understand.
Money Ways is particularly effective because Cash Prize symbols can matter both as part of normal winning combinations and through the Collect mechanic. That makes the cash values feel integrated into ordinary gameplay rather than something you're simply waiting to have collected.
The random Frisbee Feature also gives standard spins another possibility, while the Respin Bonus provides a clear change of pace.
It doesn't completely escape the familiar Cash Collect formula, but 4ThePlayer has done considerably more with it than simply sticking values on symbols and adding a Collector.
There's plenty here, and most importantly, the features interact.
Money Ways works with Collect Scatters, the Frisbee Feature can create Money Ways wins, Cash Prizes lock during Respins, Collect Scatters remain active in the bonus and filling a reel allows the Frisbee to collect, double and clear it.
That last mechanic is particularly good because it solves one of the limitations of conventional Hold and Win features. A completed reel becomes another opportunity rather than dead space.
Dream Drop then adds a completely different prize route through the Fortune Spin and Fortune Wheel.
It's a busy feature set, but the dogs haven't completely trashed the house.
5 Doggy Millionaires knows exactly what sort of game it wants to be. The dogs are cartoonish, wealthy and deliberately over the top, with the mansion setting providing a suitably extravagant backdrop for their new millionaire lifestyle.
The different dogs have plenty of character and important Cash Prize symbols remain easy to identify despite quite a lot happening around the grid. Independent reviews generally agree that the presentation is colourful and clear, although some have criticised the repetitive soundtrack and barking.
It's polished and fun, although anyone familiar with 5 Doggy Dollars will recognise much of the visual identity immediately.
Cash Prizes, Collectors and Hold and Win style Respins aren't particularly unusual. Dream Drop is already an established jackpot system too, and this is a sequel rather than an entirely new concept.
Where 5 Doggy Millionaires earns its originality points is in the interaction between those familiar mechanics.
Money Ways allowing Cash Prizes to pay normally and then potentially be collected again is clever. The Respin Frisbee collecting an entire completed reel, doubling its value and clearing it for reuse is better still.
So the individual ingredients aren't especially new, but 4ThePlayer has taught these old dogs a couple of genuinely good new tricks.

5 Doggy Millionaires Dream Drop is much more than five pampered pooches sitting around waiting for the jackpot to make them even richer.
Money Ways gives Cash Prize symbols an immediate purpose, Collect Scatters can pay those values again and the Respin Bonus becomes particularly interesting when completed reels are collected, doubled and cleared for another attempt. Dream Drop naturally provides the headline attraction, but importantly, there's a decent slot underneath it.
It doesn't stray enormously far from 5 Doggy Dollars, but the combination of interactive Cash Prize mechanics, Respins and progressive jackpots gives these dogs enough new tricks to justify another trip to the mansion.
