Our review methodology

How We Rate Betting Sites

Every betting site we review is assessed using the same 100 point rating system. We break each bookmaker down into five areas covering the betting product, promotions, usability, payments and the overall customer experience.

Our reviewers test betting sites using real accounts wherever possible. We look at how features work in practice, not simply whether a bookmaker claims to offer them.

Final score

5.0 / 5

Individual category scores are added together, then divided by 20 to create the rating out of five.

The 100 point system

Five sections, one consistent score

The sections are weighted according to how important we believe they are to bettors. The betting product and ongoing customer value carry the greatest influence.

Test where possible

Our reviewers use real accounts wherever possible and judge how features work in practice.

Use evidence

Scores are supported by observed prices, products, terms, service and account experience.

Compare like with like

Every bookmaker faces the same criteria and the same maximum score in each category.

Score quality

Having a feature earns no automatic full marks. We assess whether it is genuinely useful and effective.

Section 1 of 5

Betting Experience

The sportsbook itself carries the greatest individual weighting. A betting site can look great and offer plenty of promotions, but that means considerably less if its odds, markets and core betting features are not up to scratch.

12 points

Odds Competitiveness

Odds receive the largest individual score in our entire methodology.

We compare prices across a range of events rather than relying on a single match or race. This includes football, horse racing and other major sports, with prices checked against established competitors.

We look for bookmakers that are consistently competitive rather than occasionally producing the best price. Racing prices, early prices, each way terms and the bookmaker's overall margins can also influence the score.

A bookmaker does not need to offer the best price on every selection to score highly. It does, however, need to demonstrate consistently competitive pricing across our testing.

8 points

Market Coverage

We assess both the breadth and depth of the sportsbook.

That includes the number of sports and competitions covered, but simply having a very long sports menu is not enough. We also examine how many useful markets are available within individual events.

For football, we may examine goals, players, cards, corners, handicaps, team markets and specials. Horse racing assessment includes the range of race and meeting markets alongside any additional racing specials.

Greater depth across both major and less prominent events results in a higher score.

3 points

In Play Betting

We test how well the sportsbook performs once events are underway.

Our assessment considers the number and depth of live markets, how quickly prices update, how frequently markets are suspended and how easy it is to navigate between live events.

Live scores, statistics and visualisations can improve the experience, although they do not compensate for a weak underlying in play product.

3 points

Bet Builder

Bet Builders are assessed on availability, market choice, flexibility and ease of use.

We look at how easy it is to find compatible selections, the variety of combinations available and whether the feature extends beyond the most obvious football markets.

A restricted Bet Builder can still earn points, but the highest scores are reserved for genuinely flexible products.

2 points

Live Streaming

We consider what customers can actually watch through the bookmaker rather than simply whether a streaming feature exists.

Coverage, reliability, accessibility and the range of supported sports all contribute to the score. Any staking, account or eligibility requirements are also considered.

2 points

Cash Out

Cash Out is tested for availability, reliability and ease of use.

We consider how widely it is offered and whether features such as Partial Cash Out are available. A bookmaker does not automatically receive full marks simply because a Cash Out button exists.

Section 2 of 5

Bonuses and Promotions

Promotions account for another 30 points, but our scoring puts considerably more emphasis on what existing customers receive than on the headline sign up offer.

A large welcome bonus cannot make up for a bookmaker offering very little once you have joined.

30points available
12 points

Ongoing Promotions

This is the most heavily weighted promotional category.

We assess the quality, variety and value of promotions available to existing customers. These can include enhanced accas, early payouts, bet and get offers, money back promotions, racing offers, free to play games and event specific promotions.

We also consider the terms attached to them. A bookmaker running numerous promotions does not automatically score highly if most offer little genuine value.

8 points

Daily Promotions

We monitor how regularly useful new offers are available.

The strongest bookmakers provide worthwhile promotions throughout the sporting week rather than concentrating everything around a handful of major events.

Frequency, variety, value and the range of sports covered all contribute to the score.

4 points

Price Boosts

We assess both the quantity and quality of enhanced prices.

Our reviewers look at how frequently boosts appear, the improvement over the original price and whether they cover a useful selection of markets and sports.

Lots of tiny price movements do not necessarily score better than a smaller number of genuinely strong boosts.

4 points

Welcome Offer

The welcome offer is deliberately limited to four points.

We consider its value, qualifying requirements, restrictions and how straightforward it is to claim. Headline value alone does not determine the score. Complicated conditions or restrictive terms can reduce it.

This weighting prevents an eye catching acquisition offer from having an excessive influence on the bookmaker's overall rating.

2 points

Loyalty Programme

We assess any structured benefits offered to regular customers, including reward schemes, clubs, cashback and other recurring loyalty benefits.

Where there is no traditional points based programme, we consider whether the bookmaker provides a meaningful alternative for established customers.

Section 3 of 5

Usability and Design

We test how easy the bookmaker is to use across mobile and desktop, with particular emphasis on the mobile experience.

Visual appearance matters, but functionality matters more. A beautiful sportsbook that makes finding a market unnecessarily difficult will not receive full marks.

20points available
8 points

Mobile App

The mobile app carries the majority of the section's points.

We test speed, stability, navigation, login, responsiveness and the overall betting experience. We also consider useful mobile functionality such as biometric login and how effectively the sportsbook has been adapted for a smaller screen.

App Store feedback may provide additional context, but our score is based primarily on our own testing rather than simply copying an App Store rating.

Bookmakers without a native app can lose points here even when their mobile website performs well.

4 points

Navigation and Search

We measure how quickly bettors can get where they want to go.

Sports organisation, competition menus, search functionality, shortcuts, favourites and the number of steps required to reach popular markets are all considered.

A large sportsbook should not require endless clicking to find a straightforward bet.

4 points

Bet Slip Usability

We test the entire process from adding a selection through to placing the bet.

The bet slip should make selections, stakes, potential returns and bet types immediately clear. Editing and removing selections should be simple, while incompatible selections or other restrictions should be clearly explained.

4 points

Design and Interface

This score covers the overall quality and consistency of the interface.

We consider readability, spacing, information hierarchy, consistency and how well the design handles large amounts of betting data.

We do not reward a particular visual style. The important question is whether the design makes the sportsbook easier to use.

Section 4 of 5

Payments and Trust

This section assesses what happens away from the actual bet: getting money in and out, opening an account, completing verification and keeping the account secure.

10points available
2 points

Withdrawals

We assess withdrawal speed, reliability and ease of use.

Published processing times are considered alongside our own experience where testing is possible. Unnecessary friction, unusually slow processing or unclear withdrawal procedures can result in points being deducted.

2 points

Banking Options

We look at the range of practical deposit and withdrawal methods available.

Debit cards, bank payments, PayPal and mobile payment methods such as Apple Pay may all contribute to the score where supported.

The emphasis is on useful choice rather than simply counting payment logos.

2 points

Sign Up Process

We test how straightforward it is to create an account.

The process should be clear, mobile friendly and free from unnecessary steps or confusing instructions.

Required regulatory checks are not treated as a negative simply because they add a legitimate step to registration.

2 points

Verification Process

We assess the bookmaker's identity and account verification process separately from registration.

We consider how much can be verified electronically, what documentation may be required, how clearly requirements are communicated and how efficiently additional checks are handled.

Bookmakers are not penalised for carrying out necessary regulatory checks. The score reflects how well the process is handled.

2 points

Security

We assess the measures used to protect customer accounts and transactions.

This can include secure connections, account protection, fraud prevention, authentication options and other security features available to customers.

Section 5 of 5

Customer Experience

The final ten points examine what it is like to remain a customer after the account has been opened.

This covers support, useful betting tools, account controls and safer gambling functionality.

10points available
4 points

Customer Support

We assess support based on quality as well as availability.

Live chat, email and other support channels are considered alongside opening hours, response times and how easy it is to reach an actual support agent.

Where possible, we contact customer support ourselves. A quick response is useful, but receiving an accurate and helpful answer matters more.

2 points

Betting Tools

We assess additional tools that help customers research or follow their bets.

These can include statistics, form guides, racecards, live scores, match trackers and other useful betting information.

The tools must provide genuine utility. Simply displaying basic data that is available everywhere is not enough to distinguish a bookmaker.

2 points

Account Management

We assess how easily customers can control and understand their account.

This includes access to transaction and betting history, personal information, communication preferences and relevant account settings.

Important controls should be easy to locate rather than buried within the site.

2 points

Responsible Gambling

Safer gambling tools receive their own dedicated score.

We assess the availability and accessibility of controls such as deposit limits, loss or spend limits where available, reality checks, time outs and self exclusion.

We also consider how clearly these tools are presented and how easily customers can access and use them.

How We Keep Scores Consistent

Every bookmaker is judged against the same criteria and maximum scores. Features are not awarded points twice simply because they could fit into more than one section.

We distinguish between having a feature and having a good feature. A bookmaker does not automatically receive full marks for offering Cash Out, a mobile app, live streaming or a loyalty scheme. We assess how useful and effective each feature actually is.

Bookmakers change regularly, particularly their promotions, prices and product features. We review and update scores when material changes to a betting site justify doing so.

Our core rules

  • Test where possible
  • Use evidence
  • Compare like with like
  • Score quality, not quantity
