About Ancient Disco

Ancient Disco is a 2023 Red Tiger release built on an idea that really shouldn't work as well as it does: take Ancient Egypt, drag it into a nightclub and give the Pharaoh a pair of sunglasses. Released on 2 February 2023, it uses a 5x3 grid with 20 paylines, high volatility and a headline RTP of 95.74%. The maximum win is an unusually substantial 22,500x the stake.

The theme could easily have been a throwaway joke, but Red Tiger commits to it. Egyptian statues share space with speakers and disco lighting, scarabs have been given a nightclub makeover and the Pharaoh looks considerably less interested in ruling Egypt than getting onto the dancefloor. It's silly, colourful and much more memorable than another dusty tomb full of golden ankhs.

The gameplay is unusual too. Ancient Disco doesn't revolve around Wilds or conventional line wins for its biggest moments. Instead, special Ancient Disco symbols are scattered across the grid and connected to a Prize Ladder above the reels. Six of them immediately pay 5x, with increasingly large prizes available as more appear. Fill entire rows or reels with them and those prizes are upgraded, with a full 15 symbol screen producing the game's enormous 22,500x maximum.

Then there are Pyramid Spins, a separate Respin feature where the triggering Pyramid symbols split into Ancient Disco symbols and lock onto the grid. New Disco symbols remain in position and reset the available Respins, turning the feature into a proper attempt to pack the dancefloor.

It's a strange game, but that's very much a compliment.

Ancient Egypt has been used for thousands of slots. At least Red Tiger remembered to bring the disco ball.

Features

Ancient Disco (Instant Win)

The Ancient Disco symbols provide the game's main Instant Win mechanic.

Land six or more anywhere on the grid and you're immediately awarded a stake multiplier based on how many have appeared. Six pay 5x, seven increase that to 15x and the rewards continue climbing until 15 symbols provide a base Prize Ladder award of 2,500x.

What I like about this is how quickly the value of another symbol changes.

Seeing six gets you onto the ladder, but once ten or eleven are already sitting there, every additional Disco symbol becomes considerably more important. By the time most of the grid is covered, you're no longer watching individual symbols at all. You're counting the empty spaces.

It's a simple mechanic that creates very obvious anticipation without needing three different meters flashing around the screen.

Prize Ladder (Instant Prize Ladder)

The Prize Ladder above the reels shows exactly what the Ancient Disco symbols are currently worth, but those prizes aren't necessarily fixed for the spin.

Completely fill a row or reel with Ancient Disco symbols and the corresponding Prize Ladder values increase by their original amount. Multiple completed rows and reels continue stacking those increases, with the maximum enhancement reaching 9x.

This is where the feature gets much better.

You're not simply trying to land as many Disco symbols as possible. Their arrangement matters too. Eight symbols scattered randomly across the grid aren't necessarily as useful as eight that have managed to completely occupy a row or reel.

That makes the later stages of a strong spin particularly enjoyable because one well positioned symbol can potentially complete a line, upgrade the ladder and substantially improve the eventual prize.

Disco Multiplier (Prize Multiplier)

Every complete row and reel effectively contributes another +1x Prize Multiplier to the Prize Ladder, with the enhancement capable of reaching 9x. The multiplier resets on the following paid spin.

The clever bit is that the multiplier isn't something you collect separately. It develops naturally from the same symbols you're already trying to land.

A full screen therefore becomes the perfect result because you've maximised both sides of the mechanic: all 15 Ancient Disco symbols are present and every possible row and reel has been completed.

That's how the underlying 2,500x top Ladder prize eventually becomes the game's 22,500x maximum win.

Apparently packing the dancefloor really does improve the door takings.

Pyramid Spins (Hold and Respin)

Pyramid Spins is Red Tiger's version of a Hold and Respin feature.

Landing three, four or five oversized Pyramid Spins Scatters triggers 3, 4 or 5 Respins respectively. Each Pyramid symbol occupies two positions, and when the feature begins, every triggering Pyramid splits into two Ancient Disco symbols that remain locked on the grid.

From there, only Ancient Disco symbols or empty positions can appear.

Every new Ancient Disco symbol sticks in place and resets the Respin counter back to its original starting value.

This is easily the most exciting part of the game because the Prize Ladder mechanic suddenly has room to develop over several Respins rather than relying entirely on one reel result.

Sticky Ancient Disco Symbols (Sticky Symbols)

During Pyramid Spins, every new Ancient Disco symbol becomes Sticky and remains in its position until the feature finishes.

That gives the bonus a satisfying sense of construction.

Early on, you're simply pleased to see another symbol because it resets the Respins. Once the grid begins filling, placement becomes increasingly important because completing entire rows and reels upgrades the Prize Ladder.

A symbol can therefore do three useful things at once: increase the symbol count, reset the Respins and potentially complete another multiplier line.

That's why the feature works so well. You're not filling the grid simply because somebody decided Hold and Win games need sticky symbols. Every new position directly feeds the game's central prize system.

Respin Reset (Retrigger)

Every new Ancient Disco symbol landing during Pyramid Spins resets the remaining Respins to the original amount awarded at the start of the feature.

This creates the best moments in the bonus.

When you're down to the final Respin with several empty spaces remaining, one new Disco symbol doesn't simply add another prize. It gives the entire feature another run.

The closer the grid gets to full, the more valuable that extra time becomes.

Ancient Disco is surprisingly good at making you care about where symbols land rather than simply how many appear.

That's what I like most about it.

The Prize Ladder initially looks like a straightforward scatter collection mechanic, but completing rows and reels changes the calculation. Once several Disco symbols are already on screen, you start looking for particular empty positions because one more symbol in the right place could upgrade every prize on the Ladder.

Pyramid Spins makes that idea considerably better. Sticky symbols allow the grid to develop gradually, while every new arrival resets the Respins and gives you another opportunity to complete a row or reel.

The ordinary payline game isn't nearly as interesting. When the Ancient Disco symbols aren't getting involved, there's relatively little to hold your attention, and the high volatility can make those quieter spells noticeable.

Still, once the dancefloor starts filling, this is much more engaging than the silly theme initially suggests.

The strongest thing about Ancient Disco's features is how neatly they all point towards the same objective.

The Prize Ladder rewards the number of Disco symbols. Full rows and reels improve those prizes. Pyramid Spins gives you several opportunities to accumulate more symbols, while Sticky behaviour and resetting Respins allow the grid to keep developing.

Nothing feels particularly wasted.

Pyramid Spins is especially good because the tension changes as the feature progresses. Early symbols are useful because they keep the Respins alive. Later symbols become much more exciting because they might finish a row, complete a reel or push you towards the highest sections of the Ladder.

I also like that the 22,500x maximum isn't some almost unrelated maximum win hidden behind a random modifier. You can see exactly what the dream result looks like: fill the entire grid and maximise the Prize Ladder.

That's a very clear end goal.

Visuals & Presentation

Ancient Disco looks ridiculous, and that's exactly why it works.

Red Tiger could have produced another serious Egyptian slot filled with golden statues and dramatic orchestral music. Instead, we've got Pharaohs wearing sunglasses, disco balls, speakers, neon lighting and ancient artefacts that appear to have spent the evening at Studio 54.

The contrast gives the game personality.

More importantly, the visual presentation makes the mechanics easy to follow. The Prize Ladder is permanently visible above the reels, Sticky Disco symbols make progress during Pyramid Spins obvious and the slightly tilted dancefloor presentation gives the grid a nice sense of depth. Contemporary reviews also singled out the unusual Egyptian disco combination and presentation as one of the game's strongest points.

It's colourful without becoming messy and funny without turning into a complete parody.

I never thought I'd say this about an Egyptian slot, but the Pharaoh genuinely looks like he's having a decent night out.

Originality

8.7/10

Ancient Disco has something increasingly valuable in online slots: you can describe it in a couple of sentences and immediately know which game you're talking about.

The Egyptian disco theme obviously helps, but the real identity comes from the Prize Ladder.

Having Scatter prizes increase according to both how many symbols land and whether they've completed rows or reels creates a more interesting objective than simply collecting a certain number. Pyramid Spins then takes exactly that idea and gives it room to develop through Sticky symbols and resetting Respins.

I particularly like that the mechanics and theme meet in the middle. Filling the dancefloor isn't just a visual joke. Packing more Disco symbols onto the grid is literally how you improve the prizes.

There's also something refreshing about a game willing to make Ancient Egypt look completely stupid after decades of developers treating every Pharaoh as though he's about to deliver a Shakespearean monologue.

It's mechanically distinctive and visually unmistakable.

Final Summary

Ancient Disco sounds like somebody came up with the title after several drinks and then somehow built a genuinely good slot around it.

The real success is the Prize Ladder. Ancient Disco symbols provide increasingly valuable Instant Wins as more appear, but completely filling rows and reels improves those prizes further. That means a strong screen isn't simply about quantity. Placement matters, and one well positioned symbol can make a surprisingly large difference.

Pyramid Spins is where the idea really comes together. Triggering Pyramid symbols split into Sticky Ancient Disco symbols, new symbols reset the Respins and the grid gradually fills as you chase additional Prize Ladder upgrades. There's a genuine sense of getting closer to something, particularly when only a handful of positions remain empty.

The base game can feel quiet when none of this is happening, and the 95.74% headline RTP is a little below where I'd ideally want it. More importantly for your database, Red Tiger supplies lower RTP versions and current UK operators can run substantially reduced configurations. Red Tiger's own game page gives 95.74% as the headline figure, so that's the one I'd store while flagging RTP as configurable.

The 22,501x figure on Red Tiger's current page appears to be a rounding or display quirk, while the feature maths and contemporary documentation support 22,500x as the practical maximum: 2,500x at the top of the Prize Ladder multiplied by the maximum 9x enhancement. I'd therefore use 22,500x in your database.

Most importantly, Ancient Disco has personality. Plenty of Egyptian slots disappear into one another after you've played them. This one has a Pharaoh in sunglasses standing underneath a disco ball while you're trying to pack the dancefloor.

You're probably going to remember it.

Ancient Disco proves there's still life in Ancient Egypt. Apparently somebody just needed to turn the music up.
