About Cash Spree Pegasus II

Cash Spree Pegasus II from Pragmatic Play takes flight with a fantasy theme built around the legendary winged horse Pegasus, with an appropriately lavish mix of temples, clouds, golden symbols and mythological styling. It certainly isn't a subtle looking slot, but then a flying horse soaring through an ancient fantasy world probably isn't the place for restraint.

This is the follow up to the original Cash Spree Pegasus and once again the focus is firmly on Cash Spree, a collection mechanic that can transform ordinary looking spins when the right symbols arrive together. Money symbols carry cash values, while special Collector symbols can scoop them up and turn what initially looks like a fairly uneventful grid into something considerably more interesting.

The sequel builds on that idea with additional ways of collecting and improving those Money symbols. Rather than relying on one feature to do all the heavy lifting, different Pegasus symbols can influence what's sitting on the reels before the collection takes place. That creates a nice sense of anticipation because the values you first see aren't necessarily the values you eventually end up with.

It's still very recognisably a modern Cash Collect slot, so anyone hoping Pegasus II has flown off into completely unexplored territory might be disappointed. What Pragmatic Play has done instead is take a familiar formula and add enough movement around the collection mechanic to make the journey a little more interesting.

Features

Cash Symbols

Cash Symbols can land carrying individual prize values, providing the money that the various collection features are trying to capture.

There's nothing particularly unusual about Money symbols on their own. Their importance comes from what can happen to them afterwards. Once several are sitting on the reels, the appearance of the right Pegasus feature can suddenly make an otherwise ordinary spin much more promising.

Cash Spree

The Cash Spree mechanic is the centrepiece of the game and provides the main route for collecting Cash Symbol values from the reels.

It's a familiar concept and one Pragmatic Play has used plenty of times, but the surrounding modifiers prevent it from becoming quite as predictable as a simple case of landing money and waiting for somebody to collect it.

The fun is really in seeing the Cash Symbols arrive first, then hoping Pegasus decides this is the spin where he's actually going to earn his wings.

Pegasus Collect

The Pegasus Collect feature collects the values displayed by eligible Cash Symbols currently sitting on the reels.

As a standalone mechanic that's nothing revolutionary, but it provides the payoff for much of what happens beforehand. A collection naturally becomes considerably more interesting when other features have already improved the values waiting to be picked up.

This makes the timing important. Pegasus turning up is good. Pegasus turning up after the grid has been loaded with valuable Cash Symbols is considerably better.

Pegasus Multiplier

The Pegasus Multiplier can increase the values associated with Cash Symbols before they're collected.

This works particularly well with the core Cash Spree mechanic because it doesn't introduce a completely separate idea. Instead, it improves the thing you're already hoping to collect.

It also creates those useful moments where the grid can change character very quickly. A collection that initially looked rather ordinary can become considerably more appealing once a multiplier gets involved.

Pegasus Upgrade

The Pegasus Upgrade feature improves Cash Symbol values sitting on the reels, creating another way of strengthening a potential collection.

Again, the important part is how naturally this fits with everything else. Pragmatic Play isn't asking you to suddenly understand another mini game. The objective remains straightforward throughout: get Cash Symbols onto the reels, make them worth more and then get them collected.

Simple enough, although Pegasus naturally makes you work for the good ones.

Free Spins

Free Spins take the core Cash Spree gameplay and provide more opportunities for the collection mechanics and modifiers to work together.

This is where Cash Spree Pegasus II becomes considerably more entertaining. The base game establishes the idea, but repeated opportunities for Cash Symbols, modifiers and collections make the bonus the part where the game's various moving pieces have the best chance of lining up.

It follows a familiar pattern for this style of slot, with the main feature doing considerably more of the entertaining than the standard spins.

Our Rating

Gameplay

40%
7.5/10

Cash Spree Pegasus II has the advantage of being very easy to understand. Money lands, Pegasus modifies it and ultimately you're hoping those values get collected. Even with several features operating around that central mechanic, it's unlikely to leave players wondering what on earth just happened.

There's also some enjoyable anticipation created when valuable Cash Symbols start appearing because you know another feature could potentially improve the situation.

The downside is that the gameplay remains heavily dependent on Cash Collect. When the feature isn't threatening to do something, the standard game doesn't have a huge amount else competing for attention.

Bonus & Features

30%
8.0/10

This is the strongest area of Cash Spree Pegasus II.

Rather than adding several completely unrelated bonuses, the different Pegasus features all contribute towards the same objective. One can collect Cash Symbols, another can improve them and another can multiply their value. That gives the features a logical relationship and makes combinations more interesting than any individual modifier would be on its own.

Free Spins provide more opportunities for those mechanics to come together, although the overall feature set remains an evolution of a very established Cash Collect formula.

Visuals & Presentation

20%
8.0/10

Pegasus gives Pragmatic Play plenty to work with visually and the game makes good use of its fantasy setting. Golden temples, clouds and the winged horse himself create a suitably grand environment without making the reels difficult to follow.

Pegasus naturally dominates proceedings whenever he appears, which also helps communicate when something important is happening.

The mythological theme isn't particularly unusual in slots, but the presentation is polished and colourful. If you're going to put a giant flying horse on the screen, you might as well give him a proper entrance.

Originality

10%
6.4/10

This is where Cash Spree Pegasus II finds it harder to spread its wings.

Cash Symbols, Collectors, multipliers and value upgrades are extremely familiar mechanics, while the game is itself a sequel. Experienced slot players aren't going to encounter much here that requires them to relearn how a Cash Collect game works.

The way the different Pegasus modifiers interact gives the game some personality and stops it feeling like a completely straightforward clone, but it's still refining a well established formula rather than introducing a new one.

Final Summary

Cash Spree Pegasus II doesn't reinvent Cash Collect, but it gives the familiar formula enough horsepower to keep things moving.

The best part is the way its different Pegasus features work towards the same goal. Cash Symbols can be improved, multiplied and eventually collected, giving promising spins the opportunity to develop rather than simply paying immediately.

The base game could do with a little more happening away from those features, and originality isn't its strongest suit. Still, the mechanics are easy to follow, the presentation is polished and Pegasus has enough tricks under his wings to make the sequel an entertaining ride.

Overall Rating: 7.6/10.
