Volatile Egypt Dream Drop is a 2023 release from Fantasma Games, distributed through Relax Gaming's Silver Bullet programme. It takes a familiar Ancient Egyptian setting and builds the game around increasingly powerful Multiplier Wilds, four selectable Free Spins modes and Relax Gaming's five tier Dream Drop progressive jackpot. Released on 14 March 2023, it uses a traditional 5x3 grid with 15 paylines, has medium high volatility and offers maximum regular game potential of 6,553.8x the stake in the Dream Drop version.
The Dream Drop edition has a 94% RTP, while a non jackpot version is available at 96%. That difference is significant, although the jackpot version is clearly the one carrying the game's headline attraction.
Visually, Fantasma has not tried to reinvent Ancient Egypt. Golden statues, burning torches, Cleopatra, Horus, scarabs and ornate jewellery fill a dark temple setting, but the quality of the artwork stops it feeling like another dusty collection of Pharaoh symbols. The gold and deep blue colour palette works particularly well, while the dramatic soundtrack gives the reels considerably more atmosphere than the fairly conventional layout suggests.
The more interesting part is what happens with the Wilds. They only appear on the three middle reels, but each reel has its own multiplier. In the base game these are 3x on reel 2, 4x on reel 3 and 5x on reel 4, and when several Wilds contribute to the same win their multipliers are multiplied together. Land all three and you are looking at a 60x multiplier before Free Spins have even entered the picture.
Free Spins then let you decide how aggressive you want to be. Four different modes trade the number of spins against increasingly powerful Wild multipliers, with the strongest configuration capable of combining for a huge 336x multiplier.
Ancient Egypt may have been excavated more times by slot developers than by archaeologists, but Fantasma has at least buried something worthwhile underneath this particular pyramid.
Multiplier Wilds appear on reels 2, 3 and 4 and substitute for regular paying symbols while also multiplying any winning combination they help create. In the base game, the three reels carry 3x, 4x and 5x Wild multipliers respectively.
The clever part is how several Wilds interact. Their values are multiplied rather than added, so getting the 3x and 4x Wilds involved produces 12x, while all three together can create a 60x multiplier.
That is easily the best part of ordinary play. A Wild appearing on reel 2 is useful, but once another lands further across the grid you immediately start looking towards the next reel and wondering whether the whole combination might come together.
It gives a fairly traditional 15 payline game some proper bite without making the mechanic difficult to understand.
Special Bonus Symbols on the three middle reels provide access to Free Spins. Landing the required combination opens the feature selection screen rather than immediately throwing you into a predetermined bonus.
That choice matters because the four available modes do not simply alter the number of spins. They also change the strength of the Multiplier Wilds, allowing you to decide whether you would rather have more opportunities with weaker multipliers or fewer spins with considerably more explosive potential.
For a game called Volatile Egypt, it seems only fair that Fantasma lets you choose exactly how volatile you would like Egypt to become.
The Free Spins feature provides four selectable modes, each offering a different balance between the number of spins and the Multiplier Wild values available on reels 2, 3 and 4.
I like this because it is a genuine choice rather than one of those bonus selections where four doors eventually reveal essentially the same feature.
Taking more spins gives you longer to find useful Wild combinations, while the more aggressive options sacrifice quantity for much stronger multipliers. That makes the decision partly about how much volatility you are prepared to accept rather than simply choosing whichever picture you prefer.
It is also a good fit for the underlying game because the Free Spins are not abandoning the base mechanic. They are taking the Multiplier Wild system and turning it up.
The Multiplier Wilds become substantially stronger depending on which Free Spins mode you select, with the most volatile configuration capable of producing a combined multiplier of 336x when all three Wild reels contribute to the same win.
This is where Volatile Egypt can become genuinely dangerous.
Because the values multiply one another, increasing the individual Wild multipliers has a much larger effect than simply adding a few points to a global multiplier. A good combination across the middle three reels can therefore turn an otherwise ordinary payline win into something far more substantial.
The strongest mode will not necessarily produce the best feature every time, but it certainly gives the Pharaohs a bigger hammer.
Dream Drop is Relax Gaming's five tier Progressive Jackpot system and can activate independently of the normal Free Spins feature. The jackpot levels are Rapid, Midi, Maxi, Major and Mega, with the Mega providing the network's headline progressive prize.
The Dream Drop feature is largely separate from Fantasma's Multiplier Wild mechanics, but that is less of a problem here because the underlying slot already has a clear identity.
It also completely changes the prize ceiling. The regular Dream Drop game tops out at 6,553.8x, while the progressive jackpots provide the possibility of a vastly larger result.
Volatile Egypt Dream Drop is a relatively simple game that gets a surprising amount of mileage from three Wild reels.
The base game does not contain a huge collection of modifiers, but watching the 3x, 4x and 5x Wilds interact gives ordinary spins something worth following. Because those values multiply together, the difference between landing one useful Wild and connecting all three can be enormous.
I particularly like how clearly the potential builds across the reels. Once a 3x Wild has become involved on reel 2 and another appears on reel 3, your attention naturally shifts towards reel 4. The mechanic creates anticipation without requiring a complicated progression meter or half a dozen special symbols.
The weakness is variety. When the Multiplier Wilds are not cooperating and the Free Spins trigger remains absent, the 15 payline base game can become fairly repetitive. Other reviews have reached a similar conclusion about the relative simplicity of ordinary play.
The 94% Dream Drop RTP also takes some shine off the experience.
Still, when those middle reels line up properly, the game can become volatile very quickly indeed.
The selectable Free Spins are the strongest part of Volatile Egypt because they give you some control over how aggressively you want to chase the game's multiplier potential.
I much prefer this to being handed one fixed bonus configuration. There are times when I would rather have more spins and give the Wilds longer to cooperate, while the stronger multiplier options are clearly more appealing if you are prepared to trade opportunities for much greater potential.
The fact that the Wild multipliers multiply together is crucial. Without that interaction, the four bonus modes would feel much less distinctive. At the top end, the possibility of reaching 336x through the middle reels gives the most volatile option a completely different personality from the safer configurations.
Dream Drop adds another substantial prize route, although it operates largely independently of the main game.
There is not the mechanical depth of the very best feature heavy slots we have reviewed, but what is here is focused and works particularly well.
Ancient Egypt is hardly fertile ground for visual originality, but Fantasma Games has made an extremely polished job of familiar material.
The temple setting is dark enough for the gold symbols and blue detailing to stand out, while the torches, statues and elaborate premium symbols give the reels a suitably expensive appearance. Cleopatra and Horus provide recognisable focal points without the game descending into the usual jumble of generic pyramids and hieroglyphics. Contemporary reviews also praised the detailed artwork and dramatic soundtrack.
The Wilds are visually clear too, which matters because you need to recognise immediately which multiplier has landed on which reel. When several appear together, the game communicates the resulting potential without covering the screen in unnecessary effects.
Fantasma has not discovered a secret chamber of Egyptian slot design that nobody else knew existed, but it has polished the sarcophagus until you can practically see yourself in it.
The Ancient Egyptian setting is not doing Volatile Egypt any favours in this category, but the Multiplier Wild structure gives the game more identity than the theme suggests.
Restricting different Wild multipliers to the three middle reels creates a very clear pattern to the gameplay, particularly because those values multiply one another. You quickly learn exactly what you are hoping to see and how much stronger the combination becomes if another Wild joins it.
The four Free Spins choices develop that idea nicely. Rather than introducing a completely unrelated bonus, Fantasma lets you decide how far you want to push the mechanic you have already learned.
That is good design because the game becomes more volatile without becoming a different game.
Dream Drop itself does not contribute much originality because it is an established Relax Gaming jackpot system, while the Egyptian theme has been around long enough to qualify for archaeological protection.
The Wild system, however, gives Volatile Egypt enough of its own personality to stop it becoming another forgotten tomb.
Overall Rating
8.0/10
Volatile Egypt Dream Drop is a straightforward Egyptian slot with one very good idea running through almost everything that matters.
The 3x, 4x and 5x Multiplier Wilds on the three middle reels give the base game its hook, particularly because their values multiply when several contribute to the same win. That means the difference between finding one Wild and getting all three involved can be dramatic, with the base game combination reaching 60x.
Free Spins make much better use of the same system. Four selectable modes allow you to balance the number of spins against the strength of the Wild multipliers, with the most aggressive setup capable of reaching a combined 336x. That choice gives the bonus some personality and fits the title perfectly because you can decide just how volatile you want the feature to become.
The presentation is another strength. Fantasma Games has not found a new way to depict Ancient Egypt, but the dark tomb, golden artwork and dramatic soundtrack make this one of the better looking examples of a theme that has been around almost as long as the pyramids themselves.
Dream Drop adds the serious jackpot potential through Rapid, Midi, Maxi, Major and Mega, earning the game our +0.2 Jackpot Modifier. The standard Dream Drop version tops out at 6,553.8x, while the progressive prizes sit outside that limit.
The main drawbacks are the relatively quiet base game and 94% RTP in the Dream Drop version. A non jackpot version at 96% exists, but anyone playing this particular edition is accepting a lower theoretical return in exchange for access to the progressive network.
Fantasma has not reinvented Ancient Egypt, but it has found a good reason to keep watching those middle three reels.
The tomb may be familiar, but when 3x, 4x and 5x Wilds line up together, there is still plenty of treasure left inside.
