Rick Doyle's Daily Double

Rick Doyle has two each way fancies for Saturday. Heavenly Heather can recreate her Royal Ascot form back over the straight 5f, while Seren Star is well treated on the best of her form in Newmarket's opener.

  SEREN STAR could be worth keeping the faith in from a mark of 89 under Daniel Muscutt in Newmarket's opening handicap for the fillies. The four year old filly must bounce back following a couple of disappointing efforts, but she can be forgiven for finishing down the field in Listed company at Hoppegarten, having failed to fire when previously travelling to Saint Cloud, and she could fare better than when last seen at Ascot. During the summer when equipped with a first time tongue tie in the hugely competitive 24 runner Kensington Palace Stakes, the daughter of Profitable was able to outrun odds of 40/1 when beaten only three quarters of a length by stablemate Alobayyah, a Listed winner since now rated 102. If able to return to the level shown at the Royal Meeting, Seren Star could have a part to play in this mile and a quarter contest, well treated at the weights on the best of her form.

  HEAVENLY HEATHER could be a very different proposition back over Ascot's straight 5f and looks worth chancing at around 16/1. Tracy Waggott's mare produced comfortably the best performance of her career over this exact course and distance at the Royal meeting, finishing sixth of 26 in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes. She was sent off at 40/1 that day but was beaten less than a length and a half, staying on strongly through the closing stages and recording an RPR of 112. She hasn't quite reproduced that since, but there have been excuses. Things never opened up for her at York in July and she was beaten less than four lengths in the Nunthorpe next time, which was another perfectly respectable effort at the highest level. I'd be happy enough to put a line through Ayr last time. The extended 5f on soft ground blunted the speed she had shown at Ascot and she was never able to produce the same finishing effort. Today's set up looks far more suitable. Air Force One, Regional, Baker Blue and Lifeplan all like to get on with things, so there should be no shortage of pace. That's exactly what Heavenly Heather wants, as she can be ridden patiently before being produced late. She also gets in with just 8st 12lb and returns to good to firm ground, recreating the combination of track, trip and surface that produced her standout Group 1 performance. There are more consistent horses in the race, but very few have shown they can run to Heavenly Heather's Ascot level. If they go hard enough in front and Barry McHugh can get her delivered late, she could pick off plenty of these up the stiff finish and looks a lively each way play at a double figure price.
