Rick Doyle's Daily Double

Rick Doyle is back with his Daily Double selections. Today’s card presents some interesting opportunities, and after careful consideration, The Scallionator at Cork and Tropical Talent at Sedgefield looks like a solid way to go. Both runners appear to have found suitable openings to perform well, with strong prospects of returning to the winners' enclosure.

  The Scallionator has been competing at a much higher level since winning his maiden at Listowel in May, and this drop in grade could provide the perfect opportunity for him to get back on the scoresheet at Cork. Mick Mulvany wasted little time testing the son of Calyx in better company, sending him to Royal Ascot for the Coventry Stakes on his very next start. He was well beaten there, but showed that effort wasn't his true running when producing a much better display in the Railway Stakes at the Curragh, staying on to finish fourth behind Celeron. His sights were raised even higher for the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes last time. He was a 100-1 shot that day and, while never threatening the winner Sun Goddess, finishing seven lengths adrift was a perfectly respectable effort considering the company he was keeping. He should find life considerably easier back at this level. Zoar and Fighting Tears both come here on the back of victories and are obvious dangers, but they need to take another step forward. The Scallionator already has some useful form in the book and this looks a good chance for him to put that experience to use. Primed for this race to get a win under his belt.

  Tropical Talent 11/4

  Tropical Talent hasn’t been the easiest horse to win with, but he’s slipped to an attractive mark and this looks a good opportunity to take advantage. The seven-year-old should be sharper for a recent spin on the Flat and returns to chasing from a mark of 83, 4lb lower than when fifth at Worcester in May. More importantly, he’s now 5lb below his last winning mark, with that success coming over this course. This doesn’t look the strongest of contests and, with the yard beginning to find some form, Tropical Talent should have every chance of adding another course success to his record.
